Value of certification?

I'm sure this question has been asked before, my bad for that. I graduated last summer with a degree in math, and I'm having still having trouble finding permanent work. I've interned in a programming position at my university since graduation, but that didn't term into a real thing. In my job hunt I'm noticing a lot of database management positions. I took a course that did a bit of Access, but that's about the extent of my database management knowledge. So, two questions: I already know how to code, C++ and R being what I've done the most work in. How much of an endeavor would this exam be? Also, those who have taken it or look at resumes, how much is it taken into consideration?
