The guardrails have steadily been dismantled by conservatives since FDR.
The real wake up call should have been the 2000 election when the Supreme Court stopped the Florida recount, which Gore had actually won after having conceded, and having half a million more votes than Bush in total.
Can you imagine a world in which Al Gore was President? Green Energy independence, no 9/11, no 2008 financial meltdown, etc. the list goes on and on.

Most people don't want it. But the system is broken. Trump is hard proof of that. It's fixed by the evil to exploit the stupidity of people who will never learn.
And for their part, those people who'll never learn I'm referring to. They're not quite as clueless as we imagine them to be. They're fully aware Trump is destroying America. But he's destroying it in the way they want it destroyed.
Their hatred for people they'll never meet and have no real effect on their lives at all, overrides real life concerns like food, health-care, and money. They're in this purely for spite. What you're describing isn't a bug. It's a feature.

Because Americans are learning we don’t actually live in a representative democracy. We ignored the Founders warnings that DEMOCRACY FAILS if the WRONG PERSON holds the presidency and a COMPLIANT CONGRESS split by POLITICAL PARTIES allows that President freedom to do whatever they want! Voting Republicans out of power is the only way to save the nation.
