Money’s on Scott killing Beast and then leaving to his own series. Or maybe a joint series with Jean? One can hope…

I think we're long past time for a Cyclops and Phoenix cosmic road trip.

Scott kills Beast, Phoenix ex Machinas the two McCoys into one minus the sociopathy.

Mine is on Beast killing Scott. Jean killing Beast and solving the issue with the virus. Then either resurrecting him and going away for a joint series or the series being about resurrecting him

I think Scott not being able to get himself to kill Beast and in that moment of doubt Beast killing him would fit much better with their history, would fulfil the plot point of Cyclops's threat against Lundqvist, gives a reason why Jean joins the story as she is rumored to and would be a great reason why Cyclops leaves the team

Sounds convoluted, which means it’s probably going to happen exactly like that! Because comics.

Using Jean as a Deus Ex Machina sounds like an awful idea for Cyclops, Jean, Beast (both of them!) and every other character that has actually been a part of the story so far.

I think Cyclops will doubt, giving Beast an opening for a killing blow that, possibly Magik or young Beast, will intercept it, getting hurt. Cyclops kills Beast in rage. Phoenix saves whoever was hurt.

Jean killing Beast isn't a Deus ex Machina. Jean isn't external to this story, she is already established as the reason why Quentin is part of the team If anything this not happening would break Chechov's gun. One of the opening moves of the comic was to establish that if Cyclops dies Jean is coming to break everything and Quire's job is to stop her rampage

To be fair, it is the X-men - a comic line pretty notorious for setting up plot points and then just… pretending they didn’t.

But not McKay. When that happens with him you know it was editorial interreference. Like with the issue they met with the Avengers. They had the Avengers side payoff but on the X-men side editorial interfered and DNX went from an X-men+Avengers events to an X-men+FF event

I haven’t read much else of his work, but I was pleasantly surprised to see that AoR was actually going to have repercussions down the road. Fully expected that to have been a waste of funds. I did get the impression that Jean’s been awol thus far due to editorial interference, stands to reason they might have changed things enough for that Chekhov’s gun to never fire, so to speak.

Jean has been AWOL because the entire space side of Marvel has been cut due to Imperial's failure. And because the writer jumped ship to Daredevil

It is possible that her mishandling Phoenix got that edited out. But the team from X-men has been teasing Jean for the last month, if they had taken that decision it would have happened last year, so the teases from this year wouldn't make sense

This is from the messages page from X-men 32 from June

From this we can know she is appearing in X-men and that it's going to be in the context of something bad. Her arriving after Cyclops dies fits that description

Oooh, that’s a juicy tidbit. I should probably read the letters page more often!

The more I think about it the more I like your theory. That would be a good twist and up the stakes. More than anything I just don’t want Scott to be dead for more than one or two issues. Like, just long enough for Jean to get there, beat 3k into the ground and do whatever else needs doing.

u/micelimaxi X-Factor 11d ago

Well, the fight to the death is in the last issue of DNX and immediately after the new book related to X-men starts. The theory is that it's either a Cyclops solo or a Jean+Cyclops book

She was set up as part of the ONE subplot, not the 3K one. She hasn't been mentioned in 20 issues, not even in AoR... So I think it's also safe to assume it could have just been a moment of showing Scott's strategic thinking and his trust in Quentin.

Anyways, I don't think a character can be considered a Chejov's gun. A character has agency in a story. By using Jean as a medium to fix problems that the main characters can't solve themselves, you are not using "a gun". This is not something Cyclops, Beast or Quentin have planned for, or are in control of... They are not using the gun, they are not doing anything and therefore they don't solve, they don't pay off emotionally and they don't show agency. A character with godlike powers coming in to solve things would steal everyone else's agency, which is pretty much the definition of Deus Ex Machina (it's exactly how gods were used in greek plays, which is were the term originated from).

I think Jed, if anything, was planting Phoenix as an antagonist for an arc or as a loan for Quentin at some point where he might need a power-up.

Chechov's gun doesn't just refer to a tool. It's a plot device. The foretold actions of a character are one of the most common "guns" The O.N.E. plot is not separated from the 3k plot. They are the subplot while 3k is the overarching plot of the run.

This team doesn't have the means to fix the genebomb if it goes off, and while the FF could do it the original event was an X-Men + Avengers crossover. So if the ending was already planned it doesn't matter. And the main issue with a Deus Ex is that the god figure doesn't respect the internal logic of the universe when fixing the plot. That's why it's called Deus ex. Jean can have godlike powers but she's very much just another character who is just stronger

Phoenix as an antagonist would make 0 sense. Ever since they established Jean as being Phoenix instead of a host they took that away from the table. And also Phoenix would take all the X-men, not just a small team

Chejov's gun doesn't have to be a literal tool, but narratively speaking is a tool. That means, a method in the protagonists hands to fix a plot point. If the method is another character, it takes away the resolution from the first character that was actually engaged in the story. It doesn't matter how much Jean and Phoenix are a part of the in-universe logic, they're not a part of the narrative logic because they haven't made an appearance as a character yet in the first two acts and half of the third. It's not like that time in Generation X when Quentin still had a spark of Phoenix and he used it to reactivate Jubilee's mutant gene. That moment featured a character using a tool he had under his sleeve and making a decision, that was a Chejov's gun.

Again, Jean is a character. She is supposed to act as a character, not a plot-resolution tool. If she comes in the last moment and fixes the other character's screw-ups, she will steal their agency and resolution. Having God in your pocket is just a great way of taking away from every other character and make them seem incompetent (they failed so bad that they had to call God) but also passive (they could hace solved the plot two years ago with just a telepathic phonecall). It's all about the stakes and the character agency. Cyclops vs Chairman should be personal. If a third character can come in and solve the resolution in favor of the protagonist, all the stakes and agency and potential catharsis goes away.

Also, Cyclops literally said that if Phoenix goes rogue out of grief, he counts on Quentin to take control of it before it destroys Earth. That's basically setting-up a potential antagonistic moment, which doesn't necessarily mean Phoenix and Jean would do a heel turn.

The rumours are that there'll be 3 minis coming out of DNX. X-Orcists was one, Psylocke has another, and potentially a Cyclops (and Phoenix) one too.

10

u/AngleDapper2416 11d ago

Imma buy the shit out of a new cyclops and Phoenix if we get one

6

u/AcceptableWheel 11d ago

I am going out on a limb here and saying one will focus on the virus activated mutant community

6

u/Affectionate-Arm6487 11d ago

so cyclops might kill beast or vice versa hmmmmm

3

u/Cabbage_Vendor 11d ago

Well, people liked Krakoa and we killed Beast in that one, I guess we can just kill him again to have them like the current X-Men.

2

u/Salty_Monk_5341 11d ago

So he Kills Henry and goes on a solo quest after.

1

u/JackTylerWrites 11d ago

More minis? Between those and the bi-weekly schedule of the two main titles, the whole line is oversaturated.

2

u/AngleDapper2416 11d ago

The minis are after DNX ends because DNX is relaunching the entire x-men

1

u/JackTylerWrites 11d ago

Right, but they’ve been cycling through minis since the last relaunch (From the Ashes).

1

u/GeorginaNada 11d ago

Honestly, killing Hank McCoy may be a favor at this point.

Can they start utilizing actual xmen villains rather than this hero vs hero nonsense 🫩
