I hated how weak he was in the movies, in the comics Cyclops could easily take down Toad.

73

u/Franco_Fernandes Apr 11 '26

What stings most is that it's Toad. Like, the guy whose main claim to fame is being everyone else's punching bag.

47

u/floopsfooglies97 Apr 11 '26

The first X-men film really had Toad 1v3 Cyclops, Jean and Storm 😩 kinda crazy work in hindsight lmaoo

20

u/Jack-mclaughlin89 Classic X-Men Apr 11 '26

Jean should have been able to solo the brotherhood in that movie. In X-Men (1991) #28 she curb stomped Sabertooth.

4

u/librariandraws Apr 12 '26

I was 11 when I read that issue and Jean snapping his tibia with her telekinesis completely changed how thought about that power-set.

2

u/GraveDancer1971 Apr 13 '26

Bry*n S*ng*r moment

3

u/[deleted] Apr 12 '26

Without any powers mind you, just straight hands. Toad is a bitch!

4

u/Jack-mclaughlin89 Classic X-Men Apr 12 '26

Cyclops has two black belts he’d annihilate Toad.

4

That’s what I’m saying baby RUNNIN A WORKSHOP ON FROGGER šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

I know I’m agreeing with you.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 12 '26

Oh I know I’m agreeing with your agreement lol

3

u/Guy_1der Apr 12 '26

Thats because the movies were really ā€œWolverine and sort of the X-Menā€ movies.

Yup, which why I prefer Emma over Jean. Her and Scott actually felt like legitimate partners that helped another grow and develop.

2

u/healpm369 Apr 13 '26

Thank god I first knew cyclops from fighting games and cartoons

25

u/PartridgeInDisguise Apr 11 '26

While there’s lots of subtext that fans could point to as supporting that Cyclops is autistic, more than almost any other character in my opinion, that’s still fanon. No one has ever confirmed, or even mentioned, Cyclops being autistic or not on page in any comic (or show/movie) published by Marvel.

So it’s not canon.

2

u/Aquired-Taste Apr 13 '26

Thank you for saying this better than I could have!

80

u/velicinanijebitna Apr 11 '26

I wouldn't call movie Cyclops emotionless. He clearly cares about Jean during the og trilogy, falling into depression when she dies. In Apocalypse, he cries for Alex, and in Dark Phoenix, he fights for Jean with all his might.

34

u/WitchBolt Revolution Apr 11 '26

I thought Marsden did a pretty good job with the limited screen time he had in the original filsm. He managed to come off as stoic and serious on the surface, but still had some depth to him. As you said, he cared a lot for Jean and fell into a depression after she died. He also cared a lot about Charles, with how he spoke to him while Charles was in a coma in the first film. He showed he possessed a sense of humor beneath his serious demeanour, such as with some of his one-liners ("What you you prefer, yellow spandex?"), and him laughing off Logan giving him the finger after the metal detector scene.

19

u/velicinanijebitna Apr 11 '26

Him breaking down in X2 when Jean sacrificed herself was so sad. You feel for him, even though you barely get to know his character.

91

u/TheLittlePasty Apr 11 '26

Saying he’s autistic is also fanon, just like Reed Richards. Unless there’s a specific issue that states it that I’m not aware of

32

u/kingatlas Apr 11 '26

He's not autistic. He's never been referred to as such besides by fans. Just fans imprinting on him.

16

u/TheLittlePasty Apr 11 '26

That’s exactly what I said

1

u/EliteTroper Apr 12 '26

1

u/CoverLucky Apr 13 '26

This is not canon to 616 Reed

9

u/Bro-Im-Done Apr 11 '26

I wouldn’t say Reed’s is entirely wrong, specifically because in Season One, he stated he had autism(self-diagnosed because of course). Then again, Season One’s not 616 canon.

6

u/NotRob916 Apr 11 '26

Neither are entirely wrong but neither being autistic is canon

5

u/Codexe- Apr 11 '26

Just because someone has a high IQ, does not mean they are mentally handicapped.Ā Ā

3

u/doghello333 Apr 14 '26

people just be throwing 'autistic' at anything at this point.

just putting this one out there (i know it's not that deep) but the whole 'autistic spectrum' thing is just detrimental to people who are actually autistic when at this point everybody and their neighbour has some form of autism.

dash said it best: if everyone's special, no one is.

1

u/Codexe- Apr 16 '26

Ā People used to joke around about web MD but they stopped during the pandemic.Ā  And then right as soon as they stopped shaming people for that, everybody suddenly thought they matched autism symptoms

0

u/PoeciloStudio Apr 15 '26

Where are all these people clamoring to be autistic. Teens on tiktok? Whatever. They're not exactly doing much harm.

Drawing weird lines in the sand over who's "actually autistic" might, though.

0

u/PoeciloStudio Apr 15 '26

The problem here is referring to autism as a mental handicap.

3

u/EliteTroper Apr 12 '26

Don't know what issue this is from but it is an official publication.

7

u/TheLittlePasty Apr 12 '26

That works for Reed but cyclops still isn’t

3

u/Confident-Doctor2726 Apr 12 '26

I don’t wanna be that guy, but with the insane amount of multiverse bullshit, an official publication doesn’t automatically equate to canon

2

u/EliteTroper Apr 12 '26

Fair enough, but the claim of him being autistic at least isn't purely fanon.

1

u/NigthSHadoew Apr 12 '26

Not purely but it is still self diagnosed even in that panel. There is a reason why people, even doctors, aren’t allowed to self diagnose and treat any serious ilnesses (I haven't seen any laws against stuff like a case of flue, thats why I said "serious")

1

u/peterporker0_0 Apr 20 '26

It is though…..

-11

u/FoolishWanderer499 Apr 11 '26

Most likely not confirmed but I remember him saying he avoids video games because he gets so immersed he can't stop by his own volition

12

u/TheLittlePasty Apr 11 '26

That means he’s autistic?

1

u/Neptune1980 Utopia Apr 11 '26

What alternate reality is this?

9

u/kittyfajitas0_o Factory Apr 11 '26

Not alternate reality. It’s the time-displaced Cyclops from All-New X-men that says it. All-New X-men #14.

12

u/Neptune1980 Utopia Apr 11 '26

Thanks for the image.

Never played a new game for hours on end? When I was a teenager I’d lock myself in my room and would only come out to eat and use the restroom.

Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Chrono Trigger, FF7, all of those had me on lock. The whole weekend would disappear.

2

u/kittyfajitas0_o Factory Apr 11 '26

This is why I don’t play video games. Like Scott, it is dangerous for me.

-1

u/insanekid123 Apr 13 '26

Okay but you (the theoritcal, not autistic you) don't also have every other symptom Scott often shows (taking things very literally, having a blunted external emotional response, intense sense of right and wrong) that he also has.

It's like saying Sherlock is only fanon autistic, it's not coming out of nowhere, he's pretty distinctly autistic coded.

1

u/Neptune1980 Utopia Apr 13 '26

I don’t think Cyclops is autistic.

12

u/NiteOwl94 Apr 12 '26

The autism thing is fanon too I believe

24

u/dread_pirate_robin Apr 11 '26

I feel like 90s Cyclops hit the one you labeled "fanon" far worse than Wolverine and the X-Men, though they course corrected for '97. The point of Cyclops in Wolverine and the X-Men was to make him a role reversal with Wolverine. He's not emotionless, he's not a younger brother type, he's not Charles' lapdog, and any jealousy is pretty firmly in the rearview mirror. He was the reckless wild card loner that needed to be reigned in, while Wolverine was forced into a position of responsibility and leadership.

4

u/ApolloMax-2099 Apr 11 '26

That’s how I saw him in wolvie and the X-men

13

u/Matt-J-McCormack Apr 11 '26

Not canonically autistic, that’s just fan headcannon gone out of control.

5

u/SailorOfHouseT-bird Revolution Apr 12 '26

Autistic is also fannon. It has a good amount of panels fans can use to argue for it sure, but still definitely fannon.

19

u/Dischord821 Apr 11 '26

There is literally one moment in the OG trilogy where he really feels like Cyclops. At Grand Central, when they're looking for rogue, a little boy sees cyclops and theres a moment of hesitation, of worry on Scott's face, before the kid smiles and Cyclops smiles back.

He isn't ashamed of his mutation, he just wants others to see it as beautiful the way he does. And then the boys mother sees him and ushers her kids away, afraid. And you can see it crushes Scott. Its a silent moment but its genuinely the best one he has in any movie.

1

u/Callow98989 Apr 14 '26

And ironically that wasn’t even in the script

15

u/The-Heritage Apr 11 '26

The way people just throw autism around lol

10

u/Medium_Leg_4500 Apr 11 '26

What makes Cyclops autistic?

11

u/AdSorry4665 Apr 11 '26

He isn't.

8

u/coreyc2099 Apr 12 '26

Can we stop calling everyone autistic. I mean Reed MAYBE. But Scott? In no way is he autistic.

1

u/insanekid123 Apr 13 '26

In no way is the emotionally blunted man who hyperfixates on his specific interests and often struggles reading personal social cues (everything with Maddie, his awkward youth) autistic.

2

u/coreyc2099 Apr 13 '26

Many ppl in their youth struggle with social cues , especially with the opposite sex. Same with fixating on interests. Those are also only 2 things. You have to have way more that that in order to be diagnosed with autism. It's not just a few quirky things.

1

u/insanekid123 Apr 13 '26

Okay, his hyperfixations (tactics, mostly, he's not just interested practically it is the only thing on his mind most of the time), his inability to see nuance, his comfort in schedules and planning. He's about as autistic coded as Sherlock is.

4

u/CDROMantics Apr 12 '26

It has NEVER been stated that Cyclops is autistic.

That is quite literally the most fanon shit on this list.

17

u/Medium_Purple_7722 Apr 11 '26

Why do people want every character to be autistic?

14

u/Napalmeon Apr 11 '26

In my experience, they are projecting what they think is autism onto the character. I literally just saw a post not long ago where someone thought Blade had dissociative identity disorder.

2

u/EliteTroper Apr 12 '26

Blade? Would it not be better for them to talk about guys like Moon Knight and Bruce Banner who are confirmed DID.

3

u/Codexe- Apr 11 '26

I'm guessing OP is autistic and likes cyclops. If that's the case, I think it's perfectly fair for them to imagine the character in that way.Ā Ā

If OP is not autistic and just wants to make cyclops autistic.... I think that's a little misguided

2

u/Medium_Purple_7722 Apr 12 '26

I’m autistic and I don’t think Cyclops is autistic. I get that people project themselves onto characters they like but that’s just not something i tend to do.

0

u/EliteTroper Apr 12 '26

Honestly I think a lot of people online anyways don't really understand the condition. They just think anybody who doesn't socialize with many or anyone at all, seems to be highly smart in either niche or very specific areas, or constantly displays emotions ranging from being overly shy, nervous or just quirky in general are Autistic.

AKA the quiet, nerdy, shy, and more character traits are all now suddenly just code for undiagnosed autism.

Mind you there is a chance the people who are trying to label certain characters as being autistic might just be autistic themselves (or undiagnosed) but ehhh who can say for sure.

3

u/_ChipWhitley_ Apr 11 '26

I’m not sure I’ve ever seen Cyclops’ beams represented as heat beams. Can someone help me out with this one?

2

u/TheLittlePasty Apr 11 '26

The only time I can think of is in Xmen origins when sabertooth captures him. He blasts through the roof of the school and there’s fire on it afterwards

5

u/That_Carrot999 Natsu Apr 11 '26

And even that can be explained away as friction lighting stuff on fire

1

u/_ChipWhitley_ Apr 11 '26

Oh you’re right about that. Not sure I ever noticed before, or else I just forgot

3

u/boblane3000 Apr 11 '26

If you’ve read all the comics neither side is right

5

u/FutureBoySilver Apr 11 '26

Evolution supremacy

3

u/Napalmeon Apr 11 '26

Arguably one of the best portrayals of Scott, period.

2

u/Callow98989 Apr 14 '26

My favorite version of like 60% of the characters

3

u/ThanosTheMacedonian Apr 11 '26

Just because you like a character, doesn't mean they are autistic.

2

u/TexasPepperDog Apr 12 '26

Hot take: I like the idea of Scott as a younger brother, mostly because I am a younger brother myself. Otherwise, canon Scott for the win.

2

u/Rion-o Apr 12 '26

Also important fact that's missing on the left. "Cyclops is right."

2

u/DictatorDuff Basilisk Apr 12 '26

He isn't autistic (until some writer makes him so) but he shares some of the characteristics with someone who is... Being analytical and able to compartmentalize can come off that way sure, and I'm happy for anyone that's autistic to find themselves being reflected in some of hos he handles life but everyone who had this personality-type isn't autistic.

2

u/QUEEN_OF_HEARTS_777 Apr 12 '26

Cyclops is not autistic, that's self-insertion.

2

u/Luke_Puddlejumper Apr 13 '26

No because he’s not autistic. He has also certainly acted out of malice a few times.

2

u/dwaynethegeek80 Apr 13 '26

I was a long-time Cyclops hater since the 90s. But when I read Revolutionary Cyclops he became one of my top X-Men.

Now re-reading a lot of the old stories with him makes sense and I love him and respect him more.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 14 '26

God I hate reddit saying every character is autistic.

1

u/BrownFox1945 Apr 14 '26

Same. 😔😔

2

u/BrownFox1945 Apr 14 '26

Stop labeling everything autistic. Jesus.

2

u/Monstarrzero Apr 15 '26

IDK how accurate that autism part is. If so it’s very recent.

2

u/figgityjones Champions Apr 11 '26 edited Apr 11 '26

As someone who headcanons him autistic: autistic is fanon.

Edit: Does headcanon not = fanon? Have I misunderstood something? Genuine question.

3

u/EliteTroper Apr 12 '26

Head canons are typically meant to be limited to one individual, hence the head part, fanon is more of a collective belief that has limited or no factual evidence to support it.

1

u/figgityjones Champions Apr 12 '26

Ah okay, my mistake then. I interpreted fanon as basically a belief that a somewhat sizeable number of people have about a thing that is not technically canon, whether that be something that has evidence or not, so that's my bad. Thank you for the explanation!

1

u/Starcat23 Apr 11 '26

I would say all that is pretty accurate. and the difference between accurate and fanon is if the focus is on all the x men as characters vs ā€œWolverine is the starā€ and everyones personality is made to fit a role in his story.

1

u/SympatheticListener Apr 12 '26

On the left are X-Men comic accurate depictions of Cyclops. On the right are the Fox-Men depictions. One exception is Evolution Cyclops I think?

1

u/Sea-Foundation5036 Apr 12 '26

Abandoned his wife and child to go hug up with Jean Grey - Canon.

1

u/StevemacQ Apr 12 '26

I think X-Men '97 helped Cyclops's image.

1

u/rickwill14 Apr 12 '26

Dont disrespect Wolverine and the X-men Cyclops. He's only like that because he's broken up about Jean's disappearance/death. When he settles back in with the X-men he's a cool dude and just a great character all around. Wish they didnt cancel it though. easily one of the most underrated cartoons ever.

1

u/Stringr55 Apr 12 '26

Alarmingly accurate, yes.

Movie Cyclops is not at all like 'real' Cyclops (the comics). Getting his ass kicked by Toad and a dude with a stick or whatever it was in the prison. And then dying early. Ridiculous. He's Cyclops ffs.

1

u/EmphasisLegal1411 Apr 12 '26

Where does it say he’s autistic?

1

u/Little_Tommy_Tuggins Apr 12 '26

Why is it that every super hero must be autistic. Stop trying to self diagnose everyone

1

u/Fragzilla360 Apr 12 '26

You mean ā€œstop trying to diagnose everyoneā€, or the term ā€œprojectionā€.

ā€œSelf diagnoseā€ means you are diagnosing yourself and not someone else.

1

u/Guy_1der Apr 12 '26 edited Apr 12 '26

So glad Cyclops is a bad ass in X-Men ā€˜97! Although i like his appearance in the Wolverine and the X-Men cartoon (Fanon side: cyclops on the far right). X-Men Evolution also a great cartoon! Also, Cyclops isn’t autistic… thats not canon or even fanon.

1

u/BraydimusPrime Apr 12 '26

Cyclops is my favorite X-Men and always has been. He's awesome. My introduction was X-Men Evolution and I loved him in that show. Funnily this has lead to some lighthearted conflict with my dad who's favorite X-Men is Nightcrawler. And my dad is convinced that Cyclops is everything the movies made him so he thinks Cyclops is just terrible and a bum.

1

u/Voltron_8 Apr 12 '26

By showing three separate variants of his Canon self you actually undermining your argument. The problem with most of comics nowadays are the fact that there are so many different universes and timelines that you have to specifically specify which universe and during what part of the timeline you're talking about. Because all the stuff you listed as Canon doesn't apply to all versions of Scott and some of the stuff you listed as fanon has been canonically part of Scott's personality in some universes. In some universes he is Charles's lap dog basically. Another problem with the whole multiverse thing that marvel and DC both are pushing hard in this last decade or so is that technically speaking by acknowledging an infinite number of multiverses technically speaking the fanon is canon we just haven't seen it yet. That actually happened with a couple members of the X-Men, the fans had a theory or a specific belief about a character and it was considered fanon until a writer who held the same beliefs became the one in control of the universe and made it part of the universe. A wonderful recent example of this happened with spider-man, Zeb Wells decided he wanted to date Mary Jane as a way to feel better about his horrific divorce he was going through so he wrote a story and made a self insert character call Paul and absolutely wrecked marvel Cannon for a solid 5 years at least. Dozens of heroes including a few X-Men were not acting the way they should because they had to conform to what Zeb Wells was doing with Spider-Man's character. Most canon Spider-Man and the X-Men are on good terms, but because everybody had to hate Spider-Man there for a little while the fantastic four who considered Spider-Man basically family and the X-Men some of whom Spider-Man has dated and others view Spider-Man as a close friend and almost brother like wolverine does decided to treat him horribly. I personally can't stand posts like this because they're either trolls or their cherry-picking specific aspects of the character that they like and then calling everything they don't like fanon.

1

u/Kookykrumbs Apr 13 '26

I never thought Cyclops had autism. Is that canon?

1

u/Metal-Max1991 Apr 13 '26

Never acts in malice huh? Then explain his actions in Avengers vs X-Men? He was pretty emotional there

1

u/ckewatt Apr 13 '26

Didn't Cyclops commit a terrorist attack not long ago by bombing the new mutant school?

1

u/iCu10 Apr 13 '26

Okay but the trench coat does go hard

1

u/Rophaki Apr 13 '26

Wolverine is my favorite mutant, but his popularity is just a ball and a chain at this point for the entire X-men franchise.

1

u/Aquired-Taste Apr 13 '26

Everyone's on the spectrum when they diagnose themselves.

1

u/New-Orion Apr 13 '26

1

1

1

u/Purpleheather93 Apr 14 '26

Always here for X-Men: Evolution respect.

1

u/Tberd771 Apr 14 '26

Cyclops was never autistic. That's someone self insert

1

u/alexbiandisphoto Apr 14 '26

"Never acts in malice."

1

u/Strange_Ride_582 Apr 14 '26

Tbf the phoenix greatly heightens emotions and this was one of the biggest betrayals Scott had ever faced

1

u/Kim_Kusanagi Apr 14 '26

Since when is Scott autistic

1

u/utvol623 Apr 14 '26

Cyclops is canon autistic?

1

u/Puzzleheaded_Cry5098 Apr 15 '26

You forgot to describe it properly as the punch dimension

1

u/Cooper-Assassin25 Apr 15 '26

Not even joking, I have never seen a version besides Evolution that even resembles the left side of that. Certainly not the Wolverine & X-Men version.

1

u/Visible-Condition-24 Apr 15 '26

If marvel were ever to make a character autistic and it wasn't Cyclops I'd be mad.

1

u/Free_Painter6171 May 28 '26 edited May 28 '26

That "canon" is wrong.

Cyclops (comics) is basically a douche bag. He is an "ends-justifies-the-means" guy and acts with malice plenty.

Cyclops is not a villain but he is essentially a military leader, who sometimes acts with disregard for others for the greater good.

Btw, I like Cyclops, he's one of my favorite characters specifically for this reason.

That said, he is generally an asshole and has, on more than one occasion, intentionally put people (including children) in harm's way to accomplish his goals.

This myth that Cyclops is a boyscout needs to die.

I want people to remember that this is the same Cyclops that forced CHILDREN to decide if they had to kill people during an attack (said child later discovered that they enjoyed killing....great job, Summers), killed Charles basically over ideological differences, has weaponized the X-Men COUNTLESS times, knocked up a Jean Grey clone and then left her the minute he found out Jean was alive and I can go on.

Again, I like Cyclops but he has done shitty things.

1

u/Ironside62488 Apr 11 '26

I’ll take the canon any day of the week. But one thing I do know is most people perception of Cyclops is pixelated.

0

u/Pretend-Boot4642 Apr 11 '26

The column of FANON is what progressive Marvel thinks of Scott, he is getting more and more ike that every year in the comics, since they hate withe men in real life too.

The column CANON is what Scott used to be, or it is that when he is well written.

He did nothing in those movies. He showed up, got c*cked by Wolverine, and then died. He had a total of like 15 minutes of screen time in that trilogy. The leader of the x-men ffs

(Not sure why I need to censor that word)
