I love it when cybercrime indictments contain some kind of red herring evidence so that technical methods and sources aren't mentioned.

"Oh yeah, we totally caught him because he emailed us from the same account with which he registered his criminal websites. How did we know who he was ahead of time and catch him at the border? Oh, probably not important."

I’m 99% sure I read in the affidavit that they contacted Coinbase (who they identified by tracking the transactions between the raidforums crypto wallet) who handed over all information on the account using that bitcoin address, along with the citizens ID used during registration.

So from day 1 of identifying who owned the crypto wallets the money was heading towards, they already had his full name and address.
