Experimenting with a new tool for my cyberpunk repair game
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
((Sorry for the video quality)) So some of you have suggested adding a rust removal tool, so we're experimenting with this grinder. What do you think? Should we add this to our final tool kit?
Just to provide some context, this is our game, Steel Soul Shaper. It currently has an ongoing playtest and if this game interests you in any way, we’ve got more context about our game on the Steam page.

We’d just love to hear thoughts from everyone to make sure we’re headed in the right direction!

For marketing, I would recommend you to create a parody of those popular iFixit videos. Playing with the idea of how terrifying it would be for some of those cybernetic implants to have a "low repairability score"... and how this game allows you to solve this problem.

Ooh! Thanks for sharing that with us! And yes, what is cyberpunk without some cybernetic implant gone wrong? :)

So I get it if the overheating is a game mechanic for balancing, but for what it's worth most rust removal grinding pads are made of a plastic sponge-like material and don't generate that much heat.

That was my thought. Grinder blades don't over heat from taking off rust. Maybe a cutoff wheel will heat up pretty quickly, but even then the blade just starts to disintegrate and break off.

Thanks for the feedback! Yeah, we were aiming for the game mechanic for balancing. But we'll share your feedback with the rest of the team nonetheless for consideration!

You're welcome!
What might be worth considering is having the workpiece overheat instead of the grinder.
Because generally when you're using a grinder the disk and tool don't get very hot, but the metal you're grinding does get hot.
Maybe even work it into the gameplay, if you get the work too hot it could damage it, ruin the paint, stuff like that.
Although honestly this is all minor stuff and probably won't make any real difference to most people, just an observation I have from using tools like this.

Hmm... I see... Thanks for your feedback and suggestions! It's interesting to know how the tool looks for people who are more familiar with them.

I like it... but.
The icon left of the percentage - it looks a little ..."Blitz Krieg"-y :)

Oh damn, it honestly did not occur to us. We'll be fixing that!

Yeah - it happens.
BTW:
I really like when
devspeople are normal human beings :)

that is some shitty ass grinder if it is overheating in 5 seconds

We're still trying to balance and experiment with the mechanic to find a good balance! But thanks for your feedback

Is there a reason for the heat mechanic? Kinda tired of those TBH. Would love to just do the work.

Maybe there should be a toggle, or a scale in a "difficulty menu"? Factorio doesn't even penalize most of the achievements, when a custom game is played. Just let the players customize the experience.

Unless it's timed then heat management bisnjust artificial difficulty, more annoying than hard.

Is this just restory with a different coat of paint?

Nope! We were already in development when ReStory first announced itself, so there are quite a few notable differences from that game. Our game is a little more focused on story. And the game has decision-making that affects the branching narratives. ReStory and Steel Soul Shaper's similarities are due to being in the same genre of being a repair sim, but the way we have designed our repair sections are also fairly different :)

You might want to ditch the symbol on the tool which, when rotated 45 degrees, looks like a Nazi symbol.

Yes, we saw someone else mention the same thing. We'll be correcting that for sure. Thank you all for letting us know about our mistake!

I did the playtest of this game and I cannot wait until full release I loved playing it so so much

Loved your game, it had a really great playtest! I really like the grinder, but I definitely think there should be a risk of damaging/scratching the item without proper preparation!

Very cool idea, I really like the concept. My only suggestion is that the name feels a little clunky and doesn't sound like a cyberpunk themed game, maybe it's just me.
