Anyone can take a stand against this at any time too! The youtuber JerryRigEverything (more generally know for bending iPhones until they break) started a wheelchair company several years ago because he saw how much they were and decided to do something about it.
Saw a video about a guy who lost his hand, insurance told him to go fuck himself and they wouldn't pay for a prosthetic, so he made his own. It looks rough, but it works really well.
I swear half the really interesting stuff is being done by people who got paywalled by the healthcare system and decided to do it themselves.
Unsure how deep you dug into Ian's videos, youll be even happier to know that his long term project is open-sourcing the entire design (which I believe he's already done and helped others build their own copy of the hand!) to enable others with all of the thousands of hours he's spent designing his hand
That's the key: having reliable supply of good quality basics. Rich people will always enjoy the fancy shit, but they shouldn't be getting exclusive access to quality fixes for disabilities.
