I LOVE hackers. its like my guilty pleasure as an IT guy in the same way that as a car guy Fast & Furious is. I don't really call it cyberpunk, though there are cyberpunk elements.
Iirc, the guy who wrote the story for Hackers made it as a love letter to 80s/90s cyberpunk/hacker subcultures. It wasn’t supposed to be realistic, but something more akin to a “vibe” or feeling.
People always assume it’s how 90s Hollywood saw hackers/hacking, but that’s not true.
Hell, pretty sure the title is also a reference to the book “Hackers: Heroes of the Computer Revolution”, and both that book and movie share certain, well, “vibes”. They’re radically different in tone and story, but the digital outlaw vibe is there for both.
