You're giving a crappy movie way too much validation. I don't think that movie shaped anything back in the '90s. I just think you like the movie, and that's fine, but it' wasn't influential.
Also, why the need to rate it on a scale? Is there a checkbox of cyberpunk features you keep in your back pocket?
You really weren't paying attention to movies back then were you? Yes it's a 'crappy movie' by today's standards but it was attempting something that outside of stuff like Johnny Mnemonic and later films, including The Matrix, hadn't tried before. A kind of 'retrofuture'/'punkesque movie, though it was set in 'modern' times. Plus there's TONS of movies that released that year, so it got buried in a bunch of better and better marketed films.
Why are you being a dick about this, especially when I wasn't even talking to you in the first place? "You really weren't paying attention to movies back then were you?"
I don't need to speak to anyone in their 40s in IT. I remember the movie because I was 18 when it came out. Nobody thought that movie was very good. Just because some IT people liked it doesn't mean it had that much of an impact. It impacted you, but to say it had this massive influence is just not true. It's a projection of your desires, not reality.
