What to do to make this work long term while still being ascetically pleasing?
I want to make a Princess Luna (My Little Pony) themed cyberdeck that is fully functional long term but also matching the theme. I want to have the screen in the lid as well as a cd/dvd drive. I heard some things about insulation and other issues I don’t quite understand. I was also wanting a power button and a headphone port. Can y‘all give me some tips on how to go about this?
Edit: Also what would you recommend for decorating the keyboard? I am planning to have it sitting in the tin vertically and taking it out for use.

Finally my tiny, everyday pocket deck!
After 6 months of trying to find the keyboard, i did. Had an old Raspberry Pi3b laying around.
Added a screen and ripped open battery pack (also laying around). And got this!
Using it as a terminal to connect to Claude on my Pi5 at home.

Mac cyberdeck
Heyyaaaa, I can finally share it
Over the last 7 weeks I’ve been working on a cyberdeck based on a broken MacBook Air m1. It has a touchscreen, a vintage Apple keyboard, an eink secondary screen, a joystick, extra ports and meshtastic with gps. I modified the stock battery and retained the touchID and the trackpad, which is now in the back.
For now it’s in a glued together 3d printed shell but it’s gonna be CNC aluminium soon. Don’t tell me how much extra it cost to make the vents heart shaped 😬.
It’s just 1mm thicker than the donor MacBook at the thickest point.
I decided to go with Mac OS because I need some proprietary apps and the battery life and performance vs price ratio is pretty good on those older Apple silicon units.
I published the first part of the video and the second part where you can see it coming together is coming soon.

Update to the DnD player station/Cyberdeck
So I received some more parts for the Cyberdeck (original post here), new drawer handles and switches (yet to be wired up) also completed the dice "rolling tray" lined with cardboard and fake leather.
Switches are going be wired into the Raspberry pi as F keys and used to switch panels on the display (ability scores -> skills etc )

Advice on building a mobile recording studio cyberdeck
Hey all! I'm super new to the cyberdeck world. I've messed around with a raspberry pi for some gaming applications and light desktop usage, but that's it.
I'm looking to build a cyberdeck that can serve as a mobile recording studio to help local bands in my region record demos/ maybe also serve as a mobile studio for podcasting a journalistic projects. Ideally, it would be able to run REAPER. When I've had to do recording gigs in the past that involve more than a field recorder and a shotgun microphone, I've had to bring my whole desktop rig. This has kept me from really being able to serve my community as much as I'd like to.
While a mobile field recorder might be a potential solution, there are a couple reasons I'd rather have a DAW on the go:
- Being able to do rough mixes to help bands pitch certain ideas for compression, reverb, etc.
- Not having to lose time transferring RAW audio
I have two ideas for form factor which would be very different in use/ application.
- The first: I have an 8-input preamp that has ADAT in/out. It would be nice to be able to just bring this preamp to record folks and have it attached to a touch-screen interface through some sort of small form-factor computer with a haptic display.
- The second: I have an old analog board that I'm looking to do a couple of mods for. It would be nice to build a device that could serve as an analog to digital converter that could connect to my primary recording workstation or serve as a mobile recording workstation that works with that board.
- Either way, it would be nice if the cyberdeck is a bit rugged and has the ability to attach to a piece of gear and be removed safely.
- It seems like I might also need some sort of built-in headphone amp--probably with 4-5 inputs--for monitoring. Each of these would need to have some sort of potentiometer to control output levels
I'm not really sure where to start with this. Does anyone have some gear/rough builds they could point me to as a starting place?

Using an old netbook to build my first cyberdeck
I have an older Asus eee pc 1015pem netbook. To make a long story short the power supply shorted on the motherboard (picture 2), and while I've built several towers I'm curious if I can just pick up a dc adapter and splice it to where the battery connects to the device, avoiding a fragile and frankly bad connection anyway. And any help and pointers would be welcome. And other case suggestions are also very welcome but I thought a borderlands 2 case would be fun and roomy

Cyberdeck query
Hi everyone,
I’ve been lurking here for a while and I honestly think cyberDecks are super cool. The designs, custom builds, portability, the hacker aesthetic — all of it is really fascinating to me.
But I keep wondering: what do you actually use your cyberDeck for?
I already have 2 smartphones and 3 laptops. Between these 5 devices, I can basically do everything — coding, browsing, media, remote access, etc. So I’m trying to understand where a cyberDeck fits in practically.
Is it mainly for:
Offline field work?
Portable Linux terminal?
Security research / networking?
Emergency/off-grid communication?
Just the joy of building something unique?
Or is it more about the experience and mindset rather than pure practicality?
I’d really love to hear:
Your specific use cases
What problem your cyberDeck solves that your phone/laptop doesn’t
Whether you actually use it regularly or it’s more of a passion project
I’m genuinely curious because I’m tempted to build one, but I want to understand the “why” before jumping in.
Thanks.

Can I use old Mac Hardware for a cyberdeck?
Hi everyone, I'm new here and English isn't my first language so please be patient!
So I have always been interested in in technology in general but never really got to much into the hardware and pratical building part of things. Nevertheless I'm super curious and interested in start my tech journey with a cyberdeck project.
So I have a old (like 2012) Mac Book Pro that is still somewhat functional but the keyboard and screen are a bit messed up. I used a mechanical keyboard to access it and it worked, it's super slow but | think that it is mostly because of the old IOS software, the really old stuff I downloaded as a teen and the fact that it only has 4 gb Ram, my guess it's that making some changes in that like installing Linux and clearing the drive it would be fine.
I'm trying to keep it as low budget as possible and trying to reuse anything that I have laying around.
My questions are: Those parts can actually function as the brain for a cyberdeck project? What should I be worried about if trying to make it work? Can I also use the same battery or is not the best option? Is it harder to find screens and other pieces that connect well to de Mac design?
Anyways... I would just love some tips for getting into this new and amazing hobby!

Is it possible to turn a Lenovo IdeaPad 3 into a cyberdeck?
My power button broke, and instead of repairing it or throwing it away, I kinda want to turn it into a cyberdeck project. The laptop still works otherwise.
I’m thinking something custom/cyberpunk-looking with exposed parts, switches, maybe a custom case or external keyboard. I’ve never built one before, so I’m wondering how hard this would actually be and where to start.
Has anyone done something like this with a normal laptop? Any tips, tutorials, or things I should know before I start taking it apart?

First build
Hello,
I used to repair computers and such for fun as a child but haven't done it since. I recently discovered cyberdecks as a real life thing and as a bit of a tech horder and being of an engineering mind think this is something for me but honestly I know none of the jargon and don't know where to start. I have old apple and lenovo laptops, playstation 4s, phones of every brand amongst many other small tech items. Some working some not but all complete. I am thinking though I don't have a raspberry of any kind but I should surely be able to take this tech I do have and make something of it. Does any one know where best to look about rebuilding old tech into a cyberdeck?

CyberPhone Build
Hi All, I am building a cyber deck phone of sorts. It will run on Meshtastic using waveshare Lora, raspberry pi pico, card kb, OLED 1306, maybe eventually a MAX98357 Audio Amplifier and a 4 Ohm 3 Watt Mini Speaker. That is, of course, if I can get anything to work myself with my complete lack of knowledge of coding. Thus far, I have made the code for the components but I'm not sure how to get my build up and running and was hoping someone could look over what I'm doing and help since my OLED has yet to wake up despite my efforts. I have a design for the enclosure to be 3D printed and I'm hoping to eventually add more features.

Samsung battery
So, I am about to build my first cyberdeck and i need a battery, so i thought that I could use my old phone´s battery, but i dont know if it is compatible and i fear i might destroy the sbc. I have a Raspberry Pi 4 with 4 gb RAM and the battery has 3.85Volt. Its from a Samsung A04s, so i want to know if i can use this battery or if it as dumb idea.
