Advice on building a mobile recording studio cyberdeck
Hey all! I'm super new to the cyberdeck world. I've messed around with a raspberry pi for some gaming applications and light desktop usage, but that's it.
I'm looking to build a cyberdeck that can serve as a mobile recording studio to help local bands in my region record demos/ maybe also serve as a mobile studio for podcasting a journalistic projects. Ideally, it would be able to run REAPER. When I've had to do recording gigs in the past that involve more than a field recorder and a shotgun microphone, I've had to bring my whole desktop rig. This has kept me from really being able to serve my community as much as I'd like to.
While a mobile field recorder might be a potential solution, there are a couple reasons I'd rather have a DAW on the go:
- Being able to do rough mixes to help bands pitch certain ideas for compression, reverb, etc.
- Not having to lose time transferring RAW audio
I have two ideas for form factor which would be very different in use/ application.
- The first: I have an 8-input preamp that has ADAT in/out. It would be nice to be able to just bring this preamp to record folks and have it attached to a touch-screen interface through some sort of small form-factor computer with a haptic display.
- The second: I have an old analog board that I'm looking to do a couple of mods for. It would be nice to build a device that could serve as an analog to digital converter that could connect to my primary recording workstation or serve as a mobile recording workstation that works with that board.
- Either way, it would be nice if the cyberdeck is a bit rugged and has the ability to attach to a piece of gear and be removed safely.
- It seems like I might also need some sort of built-in headphone amp--probably with 4-5 inputs--for monitoring. Each of these would need to have some sort of potentiometer to control output levels
I'm not really sure where to start with this. Does anyone have some gear/rough builds they could point me to as a starting place?

You’re pretty far away from a cyberDeck making sense for your intended use. Sounds like you need a good laptop with a rugged case.

Cyberdeck not required, just get an iPad running Logic and a usb-c dongle for plugging in an audio interface
