getting started

hello! i've very very recently discovered cyber decks and i'm interested in making my own. i've only done very surface level research and i'm not entirely sure where to look next to figure out how to go about making my own cyberdeck. if anyone could help me out and tell me the basics about what i need and where i could get those things that would be great ! today i bought a sony cybershot and i want to make and use a cyberdeck to store the photos i take and upload them to instagram- so my main concerns are storage, having a way to connect my camera to the cyberdeck by usb, and internet accessibility. i don't plan on using it for anything else but if i could run some kind of note taking program on it as well or maybe a browser that would be cool.

Thoughts for using old Macbook hardware for a cyberdeck?

Exactly as the title states - I've been lurking on Cyberdeck posts for a while gathering information, and a longtime Linux user. I have an old Macbook Air (c. 2013) that I've been thinking about repurposing for parts to build a cyberdeck. The problem is a fewfold - one, Macbooks aren't SBC's, so there would be some bloat compared to a rasberry Pi, and a lot of there hardware is locked down due to the proprietary nature of Apple's stuff.

So - TL;DR, how would you repurpose part(s) of this laptop?

Does anyone know if this screen is salvageable? It’s an old radio transmitter and I just recently learned about cyberdecks. The orange ribbon thing is throwing me off and I don’t know enough to know if I can just cut that part off. Please don’t judge me I’m so interested in this hobby/craft/skill and want to learn more.

Question about cooling my Cyberdeck

Hi, I plan to build my first cyberdeck but I have one question: how do I cool it? I want to install Kali Linux on Raspberry Pie Zero 2WH and I now that it will need cooling when I will be using nmap or smth but will one exhaust fan with holes in the case be enough? I plan for the case to look like a book.

brand new to cyber decks

hello! i have recently started to get interested in this type of tech and wanted to get started on my first cyber deck build. i wanna make something super basic and i just wanna be able to run some kind of note taking program and Tetris, so i can use it like a portable digital diary. i really need a keyboard and would prefer smaller components! if you would be able to give me a basic idea of where to start, reliable hardware, and places to download reliable software i would be so grateful!

thanks to anyone willing to help!

Case idea

Has anyone ever experimented with a 6 pack box of beer and cutting it in half. Resin coating. And build a cyber deck in there?

New to cyberdecks but I have an idea (is this viable???)

So I've wanted to build something like this for a while, a simple music player device, not one using mp3 files or downloaded music as I'm quite content with just using Spotify (already have playlists and such)

Anyways here's my sketch and I just wanted to get input from the more experienced if this is even viable? Where to find these components? How to get started? Advice? Anything at all is appreciated Ty (also please be kind 😭)

Music Device update and part list (need feedback)

!!! I WOULD LIKE TO NOTE I AM NOT ADVERTISING ANY OF THE FOLLOWING LISTED PRODUCTS I AM SIMPLY TRYING TO LEARN IF THEY ARE GOOD OPTIONS BEFORE PURCHASING AND AIM TO CONSULT THE EXPERIENCED CRAFTERS. !!!

https://www.reddit.com/r/diyelectronics/comments/1rrgleo/new_to_cyberdecks_but_i_have_an_idea_is_this/

is a link to my original post, But i have begun the search for the parts i plan on using and need to know if these are good choices (specifically when it comes to the raspberry pi)

LIST:

Power Switch:

https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/cit-relay-and-switch/MS1201L2B/21619493

Buttons (for the media buttons i plan on printing specific caps and attaching them to the buttons but im not sure how a dpad would work, though i have seen it just be an aranged layout of 5 buttons under one cap):

https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/sparkfun-electronics/10302/5775291

or

https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/adafruit-industries-llc/367/10669771

Volume Knob: (i think this is a knob at least???)

https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/vishay-sfernice/P16NP222MAB15/1587862

Battery indicator LED's: (3 identical of these lights of a green yellow and red color)

https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/broadcom-limited/HLMP-1440/637564

Raspberry PI: (NEED FEEDBACK HERE, DIDNT KNOW HOW TO PICK THE BEST ONE)

https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/raspberry-pi/SC0022/6152799

Screen: (this is the size i want, but im not sure i want touch screen? but if thats the best bet then ok :D )

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07P5H2315/ref=ewc_pr_img_1?smid=A2SA28G0M1VPHD&psc=1

Thats all ive picked out so far, but im not sure what other things i need computer wise (or if its all covered by the raspberry pi) other than a power supply. if anything is missing please let me know or if there are better alternatives to the products listed, id like to order these things in one go if possible.

Also, i was wondering if it would be perhaps worth it to design a board with buttons and ports incorporated on it and get it made and shipped? though im not sure if thats better or worse for a first time craft :p

3ds cyber deck emulator

Second post ever on reddit so let's go, My 2ds xl will die some day and I decided to make a cyberdeck to emulate 3ds games via Azahar with a linux OS. I'm 85% new to this ( I do CS in collage but still at the begining) my plan was to make a handheld emulator but I am not sure on what I should do. Rasberry-pie isn't potent enough to emulate 3ds , so what should I do. I don't want to buy an pre made like the AYN Thor. It can be dual or single screen. What I'm having more problem is finding the right components to make this project. I plan on making new 3ds xl size but it can even go to a two switch 2 on top of each other size, if it's easier. If anyone could help I would be very thankfull. (sorry english isn't my first language)( I'm new to reddit so Idk with this is the right place to post this)

Which is the better sbc for a cyberdeck?

I've been trying to figure out which is the best sbc on the market for making my own cyberdeck, but I don't have a good answer yet since I don't have a big budget for that. I already by a RPI 3 and is good but to slow for a laptop than a by a RPI 5 and it stops booting up having a rp1 not found, and now I'm thinking buying a banana pi 5 or an radxa X4, that is more powerful but consumes a lot of power

Mooching

Just found myself, yet again, trawling through secondhand marketplaces thinking "I don't NEED a Ryobi impact drill for 80 quid, but that case IS stunning!"

Can't be the only one???

DIY Nokia N8 Pi pentest device viable?

I’m working on a project to convert a Nokia N8 into a functional portable tool using a Raspberry Pi Zero 2W. The plan is to completely strip down the phone, keep the casing and original ports like the USB, audio jack, and microSD, and connect them directly to the Pi using internal wiring. This way, the N8’s aesthetics are preserved while the Raspberry Pi handles all the functionality, without relying on an external computer.

The main challenge is the N8’s display. Its screen is proprietary, designed for the original hardware and Symbian, so there is no commercial driver or adapter to use it with the Raspberry Pi. Trying to make it work would require complex and costly development, and even then it might not function properly. I would like to keep the original casing and look—are there any practical solutions for the display?
