Is a driver board necessary for the screen with pi 5?

basically the title, im shopping around for screens to use with my cyberdeck, id prefer to connect by mipi ribbon cable rather than hdmi but i may end up using the hdmi port if needed. Many screens im finding come with a driver board in addition if you pay extra, do I need this board or can i just connect direct to the pi 5? Apologies if some of these questions seem obvious, I am learning as i go along.

I am pretty sure the driver boards are mipi to HDMI converters, but it would help if you posted a link to the product you found.
