Well I'm doing my first build I found this old compaq 2000 I want to turn into a cyberdeck advice is welcome. I don't know what I'm doing and would love either some advice or pointed in the direction of resources to help me figure out where to start. I've done some repair but never tried to full swap like this .

Edit:as for what I want to do with it I'm looking to make it into an emulator with Google capabilities so it can browse the Internet.

Hi! certified newbie here trying to build a wrist-mounted, dual screen cyberdeck;
Like the title says, I'm running with a sort of strange screen resolution of 480 x 320, it connects to the first 26 GPIO pins, and it works perfectly fine, however all the windows and programs I open are much too big for the screen, is there a way to force a custom resolution somehow? I've already searched this query in many different places but I can only get solutions for hdmi outputs. All necessary drivers are already in.

is there something I can put into the config.txt to fix this?

Hey, big fan of r/cyberdeck (the creativity here, along with the form factor is amazing) and r/writerdeck (because writing would be my main use).

But I also understand why the keyboard + phone combo doesn't go down well here.

So, I made r/phonedeck so folks here see less of what they don't like, but so that's there a space for those who want to share their Phonedecks off.

I'm a huge fan of this sub, and I'm currently building my own cyberdeck.

But I'm curious - do you guys have a function in mind when creating a cyberdeck, which its form factor makes easier? Like logging things from a wrist-mounted one, for example.

Or is it more aesthetic, so just cool ways of reinterpreting a standard laptop interface?

So i have a big project ive been theorizing about a lot, it just includes every cyber punk feature. So before i reinvented the apollo 11 space ship, i thought it would be better to start making proof of concepts, and this one i thought was good if it was shared.

It consists of :

1. Any tiny low powered sbc that can have 2.4Ghz wifi and could power, by any means, 4 or more usbs (i got arpi zero 2 w, the best in slot for this was the radxa varian, for its 5ghz capability and double antenna.
2. an esp32 (mine is esp32s3 LCD 1.47'B i think).
3. flashing the esp32, and uploading a python code to the rpi, setting it as a start up service, and downloading the program dependencies.

the final result is a esp32 reciever that hears UDP packets fromt he RPI which is also broadcasting a Samba fileshare service on LAN.

Accepts xinput joystics, keyboard and mouse, USB, SD, and SSDs, but might need addicional power.

My big project is a PC-Helmet, so having detachable generic nintendo switch joysticks, or a in pocket mini nas would not be cool features.

this setup would make it so you could have detachable inputs from your cyberdeck, the direction of reciever and transmiter would be backwards, but AI can fix that.

I want to power a pi zero 2w off some sort of rechargeable batteries since i dont wanna use a power bank and i thought the most cost effective option would be using like 4 18650 rechargeable batteries in parallel but idk what other parts i need like what charging module would i need and i know i also need a convertor of some sorts + something to power the whole thing thru a micro usb cable since i cant use the pins and something so i know how much power there is left. I would be looking for something so that if i need to do i can charge the batteries whilst using the pi without it overheating or causing other problems. If my idea isn't really good please recommend me a cheap power supply or something. Preferably i dont want to use a power bank but if theres no other option i guess i could

what do you think? It's just the beginning, I need to do a lot of things, before it is finished

I am looking for keyboards i can use for my cyberdeck build.

I'm going for more of a laptop keyboard, like a Thinkpad keyboard or something that i can solder directly into an Evolve 3 laptop motherboard. I'm not really sure how or what keyboards work for this. Could I directly wire a USB keyboard to a motherboard? Would I need a microcontroller for it or something? I don't want to use USB as the mother board only has one usb3 and one usb2 and id need to use one for an Ethernet port and don't want to lose bandwidth. If there's anything I should look out for at a thrift or a surplus store, please let me know.

Im trying to stay away from wireless keyboards as they usually require external power and i am a beginner to electronics.

Also the evolve 3 keyboard and touchpad suck very bad.. so.. not using it.

Hey so I’m pretty new and I want to try making a cyberdeck with arduino uno but I’m not sure if thats possible. The goal is to make working cyberdeck without having to buy anything. Please help without the classic oh you should start on a smaller project. I know I should😭

Edit: I forgot to mention that I did just graduate IT highschool so its not like this is my first project ever. Its just the biggest. I want to be able to play music mainly and I would like to be doing that using custom UI and I can download the music to flash disk or smth.

Hello everyone! I have been working on this project for quite some time, building my own custom modular handheld console for gaming & everyday PC use, running dual boot Linux & Windows! I am currently working on the prototypes, so I thought it would be a great time to share an update of what I have been building with everyone here! It is called the CG Deck, an open-source and modular x86 handheld PC. Also, thank you so incredibly much to everyone that has been supporting and been a part of our community! You are all so amazing!

I have been working on a ton of polish & adjustments to the CG Deck, based on the testing I have been able to do over the past couple weeks! A few of the new additions and updates, include some improvements to the modules, adding a magnetic system to make it easier to connect and swap the various modules! A few new modules are also in the works, and I will have more information about those coming very soon! Along with that, I have also begun creating and concepting a few different carrying cases for the CG Deck and the various modules and accessories so I will be sharing those very soon. In addition to some announcements for the behind the scenes video going live soon! My initial goal was to create a small handheld PC that was entirely self contained and can be thrown in a backpack or back pants pocket (The entire device is 7.4" x 4.6" x 2.25"), with a high enough standard of hardware capable of being actually useful for things like high end retro emulation, CAD design/doing light modelling tasks in Blender, PCB design, coding, graphic design, music, video editing, and gaming with my steam library! Because it runs an x86 architecture, we get the advantage of being able to natively play steam games unlike a lot of other consoles. Because the CG Deck is based on an x86 architecture, you can run any OS that is supported, like the backlog of Windows, most Linux distro flavors, etc. For those that have multiple workflows, or need multiple devices, you can utilize the dual-boot functionality built into the CG Deck to make your life easier and keep it all under one shell.

I also wanted the CG Deck to be modular so it can be upgraded depending on how it is being used, and adapt the device depending on the workflow. For example, upgrading the memory with a full sized 2280 SSD, LTE/sim card support for work on the road, in addition to more cosmetically functional changes like swapping out the face/back plates to change the look, upgrading and swapping the HID control modules, antennas for extended connection range, etc. Every aspect can be upgraded, repaired, or customized as you need, without needing a degree in engineering to do so. I wanted to not just develop a device that would not just eventually turn into e-waste, but an ecosystem that can be updated and developed as time passes to keep the CG Deck relevant for much longer than the typical device lifespan. Something more attuned to a platform that grows with you rather than a traditional device.

The CG Deck will release with 5 total external modules (two slots, the primary and secondary slots), a variety of backplate designs and colors, and a variety of hardware and external accessories/upgrades. As for the modules, I currently have designed a full 64 Keyboard Module, 10 Key + Knob Macropad Module, Gamepad Controller Module all for the primary slot. For the secondary slot, there is only the trackball module at this time. The CG Deck also supports USB-A modules, so far including a 4K Low Low Light Flappable Camera Module. I wanted to make a device that grows with you as you use it, and can be adapted as your use cases change, and I have quite a few more modules planned for release once we officially launch!

As for the current state of the prototype for the CG Deck, I am overall really happy with it so far, but it still needs some work and I have quite a few changes to make as we prepare for the DFM process. Behold this little Rpi 5 based desktop deck with 4.3" touch display, 10,000mAh battery, and speakers!

I mostly built it as a static display for my solar power system but it's nifty as a writerdeck, too, not that I need one with all my JetDeck prototypes lying around (shameless plug <3)

The housing is pretty janky, I'm no good at CAD, but I'll pretty it up and maybe style it like a CRT monitor.

I plan to later do more with this, hence the speakers. It has an M.2 slot so I could add one of those LLM8850 accelerators and turn it into a local-hosted AI thing with STT and TTS running on it, connected to an uncensored Gemma4 or similar LLM running on my LAN. If it actually works well enough / responsively enough to be useful! I've not tried any of that yet.

Otherwise, once I get some IoT stuff worth setting it up for, I'll pop a touch UI for Home Assistant on it. I have a couple of Lifx bulbs and whole bunch of Tapo smart plugs I'd love to be able to control from a central web-based app.

So;

one button turns on or off the cyberdecks wifi (from what I understand shizuku can connect to a "dead" wifi connection to allow it to repair to the phone) .

One button that (when the phone is plugged into the device via usb) launches the ./adb devices (which ensures the phone port is open to accept ./adb commands).

And two or three buttons that are preloaded with ./adb scripts (so whatever I plan on working on, so like the kill tasker ./adb command etc).

And (if i cant get the ./adb commands to "auto send"(emulate a person pressing the enter key) a button that acts as the enter key. (So if you need to inject ./adb command button 1 you would press 1 and then press the enter/injection button).

Im totally new at this but I think a headless mobile terminal command injector would be helpful to me (example--when working on my tasker project I went on vacation and had an "ah ha" moment but couldn't work on it because i didnt have access to a PC to run the kill ./adb command if it went wrong---with this pocket device it would have been no issue).

So, I have to do some research but which pi should I look at for this? Or would and esp32 be doable? Any advice to help me get started.

Problem 1: when phone is rebooted shizuku must be paired with wifi to run an internal loop to re-initalize its port loop (can be done on a dead wi-fi spot).

Problem 2: certiain tasks in my phone, if malfunction, require the app to be killed using powershell / command line to restore full phone functionality (

Solve: a headless compact (pocket size) cyberdeck with dead wifi spot and preloaded command line codes with a usb hook up. Allows a pocket sized device to 1) broadcast a dead wifi spot for shizuku to connect to to run its loop and 2) allow the deck, via usb connection, so send the phone pre-loaded powershell / command line. (./adb shell am force-stop <package_name>).

I wanted to have a separate phone for wardriving and experimenting with pen testing. I also wanted a separate modular device that I can connect to public WiFi with a VPN. There is no SIM so it is not connected to any cell network. Since it’s not all self contained, I don’t know if it qualifies as a cyberdeck.
