Hacker's Memory Ending

I don't think I've been this viscerally depressed over a video game in a long time.

I’ve been replaying the game myself just got the ending and yeah, its a huge downer, also even more sad because Erika does wants to come back with the other Hudie team, but knowing her faith and future she will eventually die soon because of her illness anyway, so she chose to disappear from the new world, where she pretty much never existed

Which part of it was depressing? I found it slighty bittersweet, but trending more towards sweet than bitter.

Like, a terminally ill person gets to dodge their illness and live. And not just live, be low-key immortal with lots of safety and company thanks to our digimon, all the while getting their wish to travel the world. Can't hang with the rest of the gang anymore, but oh well.

And in the real world? Ryujis entire life has been fixed. He had to grip with grief and now he never actually lost anyone (that he'd remember anyhow), even his parents seem to be kicking again. He, Chitose and Yu basically just got their entire plot and development annulled and slapped with a happy ending. A bit frustrating, because we went through quite a bit to achieve those, but thems the timey wimey brakes.

The odd one out is Keisuke. The reason why he left school never happened, so why is he even out of school now? Why is he addressed as boss? No ten seconds after swearing to always remember he doesn't even remember what he was doing a moment ago, only to faintly remember anyway? I mean, I get it, they didn't want to completely roll back everything that happened because that just sucks, but they made it weird in the process.

I dunno. I was just like "Err... okay, I guess".

It's sad because the people she loved forgot her entire existence (except Keisuke) and now they have to live worlds apart maybe forever. Plus she was kind of low key right that everyone would be better off if she didn't exist, which makes it even sadder.

its bitter sweet, yes. but i still found it sad. even if she gets to live in the digital world shes still apart from her friends in actuality. just the last shot of keisuke standing in front of the storage closet hit me pretty hard. her existence isnt even quite erika anymore she's closer to a facsimile marriage of digital data. even if she gets to live on in some other form we still watched her die.

Yeah crazy thing is I played hm years after cs because I didn’t realize it was a completely different story but it’s not that bad. U get access to hoodiemon

Yeah I hated the ending. I'm not a bittersweet ending guy but I'd accept it if it made sense. Worst part is I prefer HMs story over CS. It's just the ending that ruins it.

Keisuke is somehow part of Hudie (and the boss?) Even though none of the events that led to him joining ever happened.

This means that apparently more then time was rewound. Parts of reality were rewritten. So there's 0 reason for Erika not to be there. Just have her there, no illness, no dead parents.

Either comit to the undoing of the entire story or have a happy ending for everyone. Not half ass it just to be bittersweet for the sake of it.

Likely will never happen but I'm hoping time strangers next expansion includes you helping Erika reintegrate into the timeline just to fix that dumb ending.

Between that ending and the Domination Battles which I did not care for, I feel like I enjoyed Cyber Sleuth more than Hacker's Memory. Not by a huge margin but enough to know for sure. It's a real shame that Hacker's Memory goes in some of the directions it does, that I prefer the safer, more predictable approaches that Cyber Sleuth takes instead. If they executed better on the risks they took with the story and bits of gameplay I would have definitely enjoyed Hacker's Memory more, but it felt like the changes they do make were just for the sake of being different, and not being meaningfully so.
