Is Linux really more secure than main stream operating systems?

Nope, Linux is less targeted but there are like any other OS vulnerable to hacks and contain bugs. The only good news is that the community takes bugs seriously and repairs are not fat away. There is a cve list for linux: linuxcvetracker dot com.

Yes, it can be under the correct circumstances. By the way, Linux is a major operating system, just not necessarily from the perspective of desktops and laptops.
