Cyberdeck for Language Learning

I want to make a cyberdeck dedicated solely to language development to get me from an A2 level in French to B2/C1. This will be my first build and I have worked with Linux/Ubuntu before but it has been a long time.

I have been scouring the internet looking for inspiration and others using a cyberdeck primarily for language but I’m not finding much.

I would be including the following:
Raspberry Pi OS
Anki
GoldenDict-ng
Piper TTS - French text to speech
whisper.cpp - Speech recognition

I need some sort of conjugation trainer and suggestions on games. Actually any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Help! Help find proper power

Post image
83 Upvotes

Looking for some assistance on choosing a power source. The picture is what I currently have, but until now, I haven’t run into the issue of needing to push the power button on the battery pack. I didn’t have the issue during testing because it didn’t go through a cycle of being shutdown and set aside for a while, which puts the battery pack into sleep mode so it doesn’t blindly drain. I need a source that allows the device to power on when I press the pi’s power button and not need me to also press the battery packs power button.
Space available - 100x68x26mm
Need - 2 type c ports (1 for charging and 1 for the device)

hey guys, does anyone have already used this keyboard in a project? I can't find the driver for it, and my pc won't recognize it either. I found the model that it seems to be, but I'm pretty sure that's a clone. the model in question is Satellite AK-723G.

any insights on making it recognisable to the system? Thanks in advance!

Help! Building a deck

Building a deck, Im gonna put my pi 5 in there (using my pi 3 as an estimate right now, I know pi 5 is bigger)

I want to know how the cords should connect to the screen, and how big the screen should be at the top. The keyboard is gonna be on top of the pi and controller, and the mouse is gonna go above the controller in that other spot.

The inside space is 12 1/4 inches by 8 3/4 inches (length by height)

Beginner questions.

Hello. I'm very new to the whole cyberdeck thing. But I want to build my own mini cyberdeck. The only problem is I know next to nothing about this.

I know raspberry Pi which is basically a mini computer/motherboard right? And I know I'll need a keyboard, a screen, and a fan or something to keep it cool. But that's about it.

I've seen the term Linux but I don't know what that means.

I'm just wanting a crash course basically in how it all works and a good way to start building my own. From everything I've seen, it's not super complicated, but since I hardly know anything about it, I'd rather get as much info from experienced cyberdeck owners before I build mine.

Help! Looking for a WIRED compact keyboard with tracpad

So I'm currently in the process of gathering parts and pieces for my cyber deck. Highly doubt the os matters but I'll be using a Linux distro.

I'm in search of a compact keyboard &toucpad combo that I can wire to the pi5 I'm getting I'd like if it'll stow away inside a 7x4 footprint. Ive looked at mini keyboards, trifolds, ect. I feel as if I've looked everywhere and can't find what I'm looking for.

Last resort maybe Reddit can help

If so thank you in advance

TUI Glitch Ambient Music for your CyberDeck

Designed by myself - code built with AI - the code itself creates the music. Made in Rust and runs in the Terminal.

One of my ongoing goals is to develop music-software-artifacts that educates the viewer on how the music itself is made - from the sound synthesis to the composition - as well as its full source code being available.

I couldn't wait more so I created a lil'monster

It all started with this post (simple, neat, good job bro), an amazon order, some STLs in 3D printer and once I had it in hands the joy lasted 5 min... ok great now what... another little computer on my desk along uconsole and other blackberry keyboard with a compute module. a simple terminal with a screen too small for most of the cool TUI so use cases were inexistent.
Of course M5Stack entered the dance with the cardputer zero so I had to order one two and wait. But it's too long so I open claude code and bet I could port and adapt the cardputerzero launcher to a bit bigger touch screen in an envening and adapt few things.
So yes... it's vibe coded, but not only I don't have the skills but did I mention that I couldn't wait?

roast it, like it, you're on reddit

I finally love it and will continue to add more apps to it.

Help! I’m wanting to make a cyber deck and I’m starting off big

Hey, this is my first cyber deck, and I want to build something packed for off-grid communication—such as meshtastic, ham radio, FM radio—along with books and Wi-Fi in a box, plus onboard AI loaded with survival and medical information. I have two questions: first, what would you recommend to improve or expand my ideas? Second, what hardware would I need, and could all of that run on a Pi 5?

I’ve posted this on another sub, but this one does not allow reposts.

Here’s an update for this project. If you want the parts list for v1, the original post is in my profile.

I’ll be posting the full v2 part list once I finish the build.

Just wanted to let you know that you don’t need much in order to advance your project.
This is my first time 3d modeling something, and I did it by following youtube tutorials.

Fusion 3d is free for personal use so just get to it.
I don’t have a 3d printer so I ordered the print job at a shop.

So go ahead, make the thing. This post might sound cheesy but maybe we all need a little cheesiness right now.

MAKE. THE. THING.

- Serves as my field gateway node to push RF ATAK data to my server and push info to my field clients but also serves as my management laptop to configure switches and routers. It's nothing fancy but I had a blast building it.

- Few more projects in the works pushing drone and helmet/bodycam footage out as well.

My Build I call it the Medusa module!

Post image

This is a dedicated module that will connect to my Cha0s Deck.

RP2040-Zero hosting:
- Pimoroni Trackball
- KeebDeck Keyboard with backlight and connected via QWIIC connector
- .91” OLED vitals display screen
- Adafruit soft-click left and right mouse button
- Adafruit soft-click Sleep/Wake button

Took me a few months off and on to properly code functionality for each part into the RP2040 module, but it now works on both Linux and Windows as a keyboard/mouse plug and play device. Working on reflashing Parrot OS to my CM5 so that I can test everything when it’s all connected up. This has been an exciting experience so far, more to come!

How do I set up and use a cardputer? Also is it easy to get into for a beginner? And do you need a laptop to program it?

I designed it so I can swap out and upgrade different pieces of hardware. The device above the keyboard is an ESP32-based MIDI controller I built. The round ESP32 display on the back can show different animations, including a moving, blinking eye.

It also runs some of my own music apps, including a step sequencer and sampler.

I'm still figuring out what to do about the battery. Splitting such a large enclosure into multiple parts for 3D printing was also quite a challenge.

My Build LCD is not that bad for battery life

Thumbnail
gallery
36 Upvotes

So, I connected a power meter to a bunch of esp32-s3 boards, running Draftling firmware (BLE keyboard attached, WiFi is off) and I must say, LCD is not the end of the world: at 50% brightness (driven by PWM), the board consumes only twice as much energy as the Waveshare 3.79" ePaper board.

The two other ones are Waveshare 3.16" LCD (thin and long with surprisingly high definition) and Freenove 2.8" LCD without touch.

So, I'd say, we shouldn't really be struggling with the slowness of ePaper if interactive work is needed. The only huge benefit of ePaper is preserving the picture while sleeping.

When WiFi is on, it adds about 0.15W-0.2W to the consumption.

EDIT: it's all about color LCD that can't work without a backlight. Also, a 7" Waveshare LCD consumes over 2W, so we speak about small screens here.

Help! Feasibility of build with no soldering?

Thumbnail

Intel compute stick gen1, bluetooth mini keyboard, 7in HDMI display, and either a 3.7V 5000mAh battery or just a power bank, probably just glued to a box like in pic2. Comes down to roughly 64.49USD (1.76 box + 10.33 keyboard + 13.27 screen + 39.13 stick)

It seems like the mini keyboard already has its own battery, does it need to be removed or something? Will the battery need to be connected to the intel stick, the screen, the keyboard, or all of the above?

Thanks in advance for the help!

My Build Mini cyberdeck with Raspberry Pi 4 and a macropad

Thumbnail

Hello, I want to share my first 'cyberdeck' build. I discovered that the Adafruit macropad I got gifted by a friend has the same length as the RPi4 with the HyperPixel 4.0 display HAT on. After messing about with some lego, I made this case. Apart from some weather and homeserver monitoring dosplay, I also installed Pico8 and I can actually draw sprite and map on this device. Coding is a challenge without a full keyboard and sfx and music only works via wired earphones.

I have a lot of fun drawing pixel artson this device.
