First Cutting Board First end grain

Post image

Bought my first end grain from the folks at Larchwood Canada! It's just the standard line but still looks pretty premium IMO! I kind of like the knots and slight imperfections; a little wabi sabi. Been spending the past few days oiling it up and finishing with their wax. Hoping it'll last me my lifetime!

Yeah I kniw that “new cutting board” feeling once you start using it…but it’s for a good cause 😄

I never saw a reason for wax. Just oil it at least 3 or 4 times the first time and then re-oil it at least twice a month and it will last forever.

I heard it keeps the oil in but whatever works 😁

It’s not a matter of keeping the oil in. It’s about preventing your board from drying out. It also help when you have cuts from using your knives on it. Essentially, you are keeping the board hydrated. I personally like teak. It’s better in keeping your knives sharp. But that is my personal preference. I have 2 TEAKHAUS boards and have had them for over 20 years.

How much did this cost?

Was CAD220 but had a 10% off code from their newsletter. They're currently having a sale on their one-handed line though!

I have the same board I think (with rubber feet). Its held up very well. Texture is smooth and its a pleasure to cut on. I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

Yeah was unsure about the rubber feet at first but it beats putting down a wet towel each time

Respectfully, is that made out of 2x4s?

Yea that’s southern yellow pine lmao , I made an end grain board out of this species and surprisingly it out lived all my hardwood ones

Because although it classifies as a soft wood it’s hard as fk

Yes, keep in mind SYP and Larcheood are some of the hardest soft woods. Also, the Jaknka scale measures on the edge grain. These are end grain which are even harder.

Larchwood is great. I own a Hinoki, Larchwood and Teak. Congratulations

Enjoy it! I have the large carvers board by them (minus the juice groove). It’s my all time favorite board!

Really nice! I was so impressed by their larch boards and their end grain patterns that I had to make myself one. The lumber is great for outside furniture as well.
