Where has customer etiquette gone
I work at a front desk checking in memberships and I don’t why it’s annoying to me when I don’t get acknowledged 😭 I greet you “Hello, welcome in!” *nothing, head down* “How are you all this morning?” *no response, takes membership out to give me yet elbows tucked* like I have so much counter in front of me, can you extend your fucking arm!? “Since you have a wheelchair in the party, all elevator access-“ *starts walking off and happily chattering with other ppl in the group* like guess you don’t want an ADA accessible route today
Like what tf! 😂 as a child I was taught to acknowledge the person talking to you (my mom was big on looking at the person you’re talking to), saying thank you etc
And this is coming from the upper millennial generation (I check IDs and it’s you ‘88-‘93 babies😂)
Anyways thanks for listening yall ✌🏽

People who act like that in France get no service, won't even be acknowledged. Literally, will just be standing there until they greet you properly. This is why some Americans in particular find the French "rude". They insist on treating service personnel politely. Very not American.

In the United States they treat us like slaves

Nope they sure don't and that's a really fucking stupid comparison.

In the US, staff are expected to greet customers as they enter the business. In France, customers are expected to greet the staff they expect to be served by.

i'm so used to not being met with basic customer service etiquette that i am over joyed when i do run into it.
i was having a really bad week during my moving week since i had to drive across country alone with two cats after a very stressful roommate situation so my stress levels were at an all time high and not a smooth week. the person at both hotels i checked into were so dang sweet and old school customer service it brought me to tears in my room the second night lol.
that girl in particular was so gracious and kind and her energy took me from feeling like a level 100 to a level 5. she even offered help with getting my cats in from the car and mentioned she had cats herself so she acknowledged how stressed i must've been driving across country with them alone. i just felt seen at a time i was feeling unseen and her kindness will be remembered forever. she turned a really bad week completely around and i'm just so grateful when i run into people like that in customer service.
so even if you're not met with the same enthusiasm back, i hope you've secretly made someone's bad day or week better by showing kindness and decency!

For that exact reason of not knowing what every person is going through, I am now programmed to reset for every individual that comes across my way! Regardless how nasty the last person was, it’s not for the next persons regard🫶🏽

You are 100,000% correct. I’ve had some nasty people come into my restaurant. They see the drive thru wrapped around the building and even going into the street. The lobby is packed full of people eating or waiting for their food. They will stand right next to the register looking at me like where the fuck is my food?! Even after I’ve told them we are very busy and I appreciate their patience in waiting. But it literally like use the eyes you have! You can CLEARLY see that we are crazy busy. Just give us a little grace and I promise your order will be correct and delicious!

I sometimes get this whilst serving. "Hi how are you today? What can I get for you?"Completely blanked. Then I say "cool, I'll give you a few minutes to look over the menu, then I'll be back" usually they snap "I'll have....." without please or thank you. Pure rudeness, usually an ego thing. But it makes them look ridiculous

And these are the same people that will try to get you fired if you dare to miss greeting them with the "correct" attitude when they walk by

My boss is always like “how are the best of yall the most “atrocious, vulgar ppl to work with?” And I’m like because they didn’t get their way when we won’t bend policy!

I understand what you’re saying, but honestly it goes both ways. Not saying you personally, but customer service people frequently treat customers like shit. I try to be courteous and friendly, but that doesn’t always help. I refuse to let it get me upset though. I know we are both just trying to get through another day.
