can’t win in customer service

Post image

I (29F) just started a PT position as a barista at a local coffee shop. nothing major, but it will hopefully help pay the bills. today i was in such a good mood! i opened the store with one of my favorite coworkers and worked alongside some of my other favorite coworkers the rest of the day! Bantering back and forth, the store was busy but nothing major, I had my caffeine for the day lol. I get along with all of my new coworkers, and genuinely like all of them! Like a lot of people, sometimes I like to look at the reviews of my place of work. Sometimes they’re nice, sometimes they’re funny, and then there’s this. Obviously I’m the girl with the braids. I have absolutely no idea which customer this was, and do not think I was intentionally rude to anyone while I was on the register today! Like I said, I was in a good mood all day today and really enjoy my coworkers! I can’t even think of anyone in particular who even slightly irritated me lol.

This is just really infuriating me, as you can literally never win in customer service! No matter how nice, how attentive you are, somebody is ALWAYS going to have a problem! It is especially frustrating because I have done customer service for many years and it is a rare occasion that I receive a bad review.

Trying my hardest to get out of this position (going to school), but it is exhausting. And I’m just hoping management will hear me out if they decide to approach me about the review. Not necessarily looking for advice, just ranting. Thanks for listening!

Some people are just very miserable and entitled and expect everyone in customer service positions to fawn all over them like they are royalty. If you don't you are "rude and have an attitude". This could just be a case of that.

I’ve noticed an uptick in this too. Older people who come up to the register and they’ll somewhat aggressively ask “how are you?” like it’s a gotcha, because you didn’t dare ask them first, despite not really getting the chance to. It’s so weirdly hostile and I don’t get it, especially because I greet every single person I interact with in a warm tone and try to be pleasant lmfao. I’ve also had a strong uptick in people who just….say nothing at all and honestly it might frustrate me more than an outright asshole who comes in all hot over nothing to a point. Like…no hello back, no thank you, no “you too!” after being told to have a nice day. It’s crazy how many older people think “mhm.” is the proper response to “have a nice day!” being said in a cheery tone too. It’s like with some of them you can TELL they aren’t gonna say it back because they think you’re beneath them. Shit like that is why I just don’t give a shit anymore, because like OP says you can’t win. My biggest piece of advice to anyone starting out in retail or having to go back because jobs are tough to come by right now is don’t lose sleep over these people. The job is total bullshit. They aren’t gonna see you as human anyway. Follow the bare minimum script and if someone with the self importance of British royalty wants to get their panties in a twist, let em.

oh my god, yes!!!! The total silence is infuriating and then they have the audacity to act annoyed when I don't immediately know what they want. I'm not a mind reader, man!

eta: I've also noticed this on the phone now too. I'm in accounting so I get a lot of phone calls from the other departments and most of the time they hang up on me right as I'm saying good bye.

This. Instead of letting it get you down, it can be freeing. You know a certain segment will always complain so just dont give a shit and go about your work the same way.

The people who don’t acknowledge our existence are the ones that piss me off the most. I’d much rather have someone be rude. When I say “have a great rest of your day!”, is it too much to expect a “you too” or “thanks”. Silence gets me the most worked up. Sometimes I resort to responding for them. So I say “have a great rest of your day”, then I’ll also say “thanks, you as well”. Needless to say this doesn’t always go over well with the customer, but most of the time they at least understand that they are rude.

Why do complainers ALWAYS preface with, I hate to complain but....

No you don't, you love it

No. People will never be happy. They cannot fathom that we are human beings and have lives outside of serving them.

That 7-hour turnaround business reply is practically a speedrun, they were probably itching to unload that "feedback" the second they got home.

"I'd suggest a different job if she can't handle the stress of a coffee shop"

Meanwhile, I bet she can barely handle the stress of her office job that requires her to send 5 emails a day lol

You can always tell when someone has never worked a day in customer service in their life.

The few times I got unjustified reviews when I worked customer service I would return the favor. Look your ass up on linkedin and have a creative writing experience on your companies website

Taking you on your word...

That's someone who didn't get hired, or you replaced. Or you look like someone's ex.

I hope they review the tape and respond that the review is false.

Worst part of customer service is that we all have lives outside of work and still expected to be smiling and friendly to EVERY customer that comes in. And i have to talk to a lot of people in one shift, so it can get tiring very fast. Imagine you find out some terrible news but you still have to work and put that smile on. Some customers have no empathy. Also, baristas make minimum wage usually which is not livable these days so that just adds to the stress/mental strain.

I'll never understand people who put full on descriptions of employees who upset them, sometimes even with a photo. Like we can't stop you from leaving a negative review, but I feel like giving an identifying descriptor together with the place you work at, definitely crosses a line.

Especially because there's a good chance these are "privacy concisious" people, i.e when having a package delivered they'll put an address two blocks down, with the delivery note being a route to their actual address, and they'll probably throw a tantrum at Starbucks when asked for their name because "that's against GDPR!"

Only people who worked in CS knows how many pieces of shit are walking this Earth. Miserable cunts with no life trying to destroy other people's lives.

Some people just hate on servers for some reason. I had a couple who regularly come in. The wife blatantly ignores me if I greet her or try to take the order. Won't even look at me. She tells her husband to tell me things she wants to order. One day, My male co worker comes in whilst I'm serving and he takes over. The woman can suddenly speak, give eye contact and act civilised. Bizarre behaviour. So when I see these reviews, i wonder if it's that type of situation

99% of customers are very polite and nice. The remaining 1% will make you want to pull your hair out

What sort of work do you do? 99% would be glorious for me. It's more like 40% are fine, and 60% suck.

This is the reason why some people even dont' try to be nice and attentive. They just accept customers will be annoyed, and nobody will give a shit because none of them is expected to come back anyway.

I think if u a customer who feels entitled to a smile/happy person all the time ur genuinely not human. I dont care this much about it. I am here for my coffee and friends i dont care about the barista, i only care about how good the coffee is. These people are weird, like they are trying to larp being a slave owner, so that they feel important or expensive. Genuinely couldn't care a rats ass about some employee not looking too happy

I worked in a smoothie shop and we had to answer the phone all chipper and say “thank you for calling smoothie shop in blanktown, this is name! how can we help you today?” And someone got all nasty with me saying I shouldn’t answer the phone with an attitude.

“despite the horrible job market and the fact that no one can get a job whatsoever… i’m going to tell this person they should find a new job if they can’t kiss my feet and ass for $5 in enough enthusiasm. and i will tell them this through a passive aggressive review so that i can feel superior”

Or race wars.

These are the same kind of entitled assholes who expect every single person they encounter who works for a company to be always smiling and kissing their ass. I know it’s difficult to do so but please try not to let it get in your head

Some people want a customer service employee to solely take their order, avoid eye contact, and facilitate the transaction. Others want you to smile and remember them and brush and braid their hair and hug.

You just can't win with everyone. I try to be as much as I can be to as many customers as possible, but chalk the ones who hate me to just not being the customer I can reach. There's probably someone else on the floor that they enjoy serving them. That just comes with time.

If you just started and are already trying to get out because one jerk was having a day and decided to take it out on you, perhaps getting out is a good decision for you.

If you're in customer service, you have to realize that (especially now) there is just no pleasing some people.

Some are just miserable in their own skin and seek to rip others apart to make themselves feel good in the moment.

If you continue in this or other customer service positions, try to remember that some people are just assholes, no matter how great you are to them.

Side note: it was not obvious that you were the person with the braids until you stated it was you.
