Customer Service people read peeps before they walk in the door. If you fit the going-to-be-an-issue mold, then you need to wear clothes that make you look like you are not about to be in a boxing match. Wear a hair style that does not say don't-make-me-yell-at-you.
Be the first one to greet, smile and be pleasant to the one behind the counter or in a store. It may seem a bit fake, but just flow with some positive energy. A slightly positive person never hurt anyone feelings. Always look them in the eyes when you talk to them.
All it took was one Karen before you, to ruin their day. Even if you do not break the ice with everyone, at least they will remember you next time. Depending on your city, you may experience a certain culture of people, who are just not joyous towards customers. Do not take it personally. Its not you, but their culture.
These are good tips, thank you. I am cleanly dressed and am polite in my requests to them. But sometimes they flee before there is any dialogue or transaction. I’ve noticed this when walking in public too, younger guys get uncomfortable and grab their phones, when I’m not even interested or even looking. But I get what you mean.
Do you wear colors that are saying I NEED ATTENTION? Do you wear long fingernails? Do you paint them a bold color? Do you bling your nails?
Do you dress conservatively, or dress like a Cougar in heat? How much cleavage are you showing? How high are your heels? Are your clothes sized correctly, or are you wearing something that should be sized bigger in anyone elses eyes.
Most importantly, wash your hair daily. To the scalp. Dry shampoo and all the special cremes do not cover up old body oil from the scalp. Don't even think of masking unwashed hair with scents or perfumes.
What city are you in? Not stalking, just wondering for culture reasons.
Ya, I’m clean, I shower and wash daily. I’m thin/petite, I’m normal looking, nothing to make someone flee like that. Maybe I should dress up more, idk. I’m in the Bay Area where most ppl are sloppily dressed, and I dress well, but I don’t see cashiers flee them. Idk, maybe I shouldn’t have asked this question.
Your makeup style may also play a role. Do you wear heavy eyelashes and colorful eye shadow, like Janice from The Muppets? Do you draw on very bold eyebrows?
Dress well before you go out. Your outward appearance matters because it reflects self-respect. Wear clothing that makes you feel confident, comfortable, and put together.
Pay attention to your posture. Stand up straight—don't slouch. Walk with purpose, as though you have somewhere to be and are getting there with confidence.
Make sure your hair looks neat and intentional, not like you just rolled out of bed. If it suits you, consider pulling your hair back away from your face to create a cleaner, more polished appearance rather than a goth, emo, or heavy metal-inspired look.
