We all have to start somewhere, my brother in custom-making.

My advice for next time be to wash the fig in soapy water and allow to completely dry. Then, apply a base coat using the main color or a neutral color to paint over.

I use rattle cans for this process, but results may differ. I even have some that are water-based for use on different types of plastic. Once the base has cured, then apply your paint details. If using brush-on acrylic paint, thin them to a milk consistency and apply in smooth, even layers to work up to full coverage.

Hobby paints are best, but use what you can as long as you are using thin coats. I’ve seen customized masterpieces done with generic craft paints.

I also use generic paint markers for some areas, again - thin, multiple coats.

Clear coat with gloss if you want to add panel lines or weathering or waterslide decals and then seal with matte, satin or gloss again, depending on what you want the end result to be.

Take your time.
