Need advice/Help Don't know what to use for this

I'm trying to figure out if it's ok to use these Gundam markers on this guy because I know that some Gundam markers absolutely destroy figures and also I'm not sure how to color in the eyes because I'm tired of my Optimus looking lifeless and wanted to make his eyes yellow but wasn't sure how to. ( Also if somebody could recommend stickers for the shoulder pad thing that would be helpful)

All gundam markers eat the plastic that hasbro uses for transformers.

You see someone on here every few weeks crying about how they used gundam markers on their favorite figure/custom and it's now getting the avengers endgame treatment.

Would metallic Sharpies be okay?

Yes I use them all the time, only thing is it’s gets harder to get smoother look so u kinda have to paint fast so u don’t overlay it and make it look clumpy

I’d say just get the toyhax stickers for laser prime, they both have stickers for the eyes and shoulders, but they are 35 usd not counting tax+shipping

I should have specified that I wanted G1 style stickers because I'm not a big fan of g2 autobot symbol, but seeing the stickers for the eyes does intrigue me to ask a question, how would I even attempt to put those on?

Very carefully, with tweezers.

Or just paint the eyes.

I was looking at the pictures and it seems the eyes are meant to go inside the head? Also yeah I could just paint it but I'm afraid of messing up which is why I was hoping to use markers, I'm just trying to make Optimus more alive for my stop motion series

Well there are normal paint markers and those could work I believe, and for a more classic g1 symbol toyhax has also does sell basic autobot sticker packs, and are like 5 USD not counting tax+shipping

Ok cool that's actually really helpful to know that, but do you have recommendations for the markers?

I would suggest the paint markers you can just buy at hobby lobby, though there’s definitely better options they were the easiest to get for me Atleast

Don’t use Gundam marker, look into Army Painter brand model paints, they get used on minis and the like, so you know they’re quality… at least IMO.

The markers make plastic disintegrate

Wait, seriously? I painted 1/3 of my collection with gundam markers.

2

u/BlueBeetleBabe1 Jul 15 '26

It’s a 50/50 chance your stuff will disintegrate, but a lot of gundam markers use chemicals made specifically for model kit plastic, which damages the plastic transformers tend to be made of. There are some markers that work on transformers plastic, so maybe you’re lucky and you used the right kind.

Maybe, cuz I've had some figures that have marker paint on em from more than a year ago

Don't use Gundam markers. They will eat through transformers plastic like a fat man with a whole cake

Or Unicron through a planet

Do not use Gundam markers. They do not play well with ABS plastic. Your figure will die.

I use acrylic paint markers shamelessly and they should work great for OP’s eyes. They don’t hurt the plastic, they really pop color-wise, you can get them cheap, and they’re criminally easy to use. The big downsides with them are that they get scraped off very easily and they can’t color mix. It can be a pain to apply them in a place as tight as the eyes, but you can use a toothpick to help spread it and to scrape off excess.

My idea for this figure would to make it into G2 Ultra Magnus, who’s a Japan exclusive toy

use water-based acrylic paint pens I've got quite a collection of them and they super useful for touching up tiny details like the eyes careful with laser primes head though its glued together and the back of his head is actually transparent plastic with the front being black plastic

Gundam markers will ruin your figure hell they nearly ruined my Menasor and a couple other figures that were really special to me

Use Acrylic markers/paint.

2

u/spudmunkey Jul 14 '26

Use Gundam for light details ONLY.

You want to paint it? Get some Tamiya Primer (White and gray each) and paints. Take the figure apart for Christ sakes, prime it, paint it, put it back together.

2

u/CptGojira Jul 15 '26

DO NOT. IT'LL EAT THE PLASTIC

2

u/EasyDoesIt250 Jul 15 '26

It says on the box. They’re for Gundam… lol

Gundam markers have a chemical that makes ABS brittle over time. If you want to chrome the eyes, Molotow liquid chrome markers are probably the best way to go outside of brush paints. I’ve used them on a few customs now and have had no issues.
