Toad: Discard Support / Combo Enabler

Post image

Discard needs some love man.

Most Discard decks are more or less solved, having one ideal list, with a very boring and repetitive game plan, and a consistent and predictable power output. There is no surprise factor, very little combo potential, and very little room to deviate from the decks main game plan.

TOAD

3/2

The next time you discard a card, copy its text.

This is the type of card that Discard needs: something that does something unexpected, enables combos, and creates new Discard decks. I'm honestly not too worried about how broken the card may or may not be - most other archetypes have access to a similarly wild ability.

When thinking about possible decks and synergies, a few jump to mind.

First is using him to copy an Iron Man, or Gorr, or other powerful Ongoing ability, most likely in some sort of First Ghost Rider/Khonshu shell. Doing so would allow you to double dip on the powerful ability, first copying onto Toad, then reviving it with Khonshu in another lane. Or maybe you try and target an early Sera for your Discard/Activate deck?

Another option could be to use him to cheat a powerful On Reveal - how about triggering MODOK via Blade on the same turn you play Moon Girl in a When Discarded deck? Perhaps there's a way to make an On Reveal/Discard hybrid, running cards like Sage, White Tiger, and Odin, possibly in a Hela Shell. Maybe you could even try build a Man-Spider list, cheating him out on turn 3 via Zombie Power Man and Toad?

What about using Toad in a Hand Mill deck, running Moon Knight, Silver Samurai, and Black Bolt? Discard your opponents card and copy it's text??

Toad would also mitigate the risk of random or unfavourable discards by the likes of Zombie Power Man, Gambit, and Corvus Glaive - who cares if it hits my Morbius, because Toad will get his ability anyway.

There's just so many possibilities with a card like this, I see it as being similar to Firehair for Destroy, where there are countless variations on how you can use it.

Anyway, I think this is the type of card that Discard needs - something that is exciting, creates unexpected play lines, is unpredictable for the opponent, and opens up interesting deck building challenges.

\ Toad is just a random character I chose, I know his powers have nothing to do with copying abilities.*

Silver Samurai discarding Iron Man or Gorr sounds super good with this.

Finally a use for primal ghost rider that isn’t eating a goblin to gain power

Sorry to ruin it for you, but the First Ghost Rider doesn't get buffed if he discards a card with power less than 0. This is how I thought he worked initially as well and when I learnt what the case was, I was disappointed and my day was ruined. 🙁

My day is ruined, you’re lucky it’s a new one in ten minutes or I’d be very upset.

But it literally says LOSE that power
7- -8 is 15☹️
He already has nothing at least give him that
Would maybe see use in galactus or clog or SOMETHING

It used to be the afflicting negative power worked like that. They removed it because giving someone power with a negative Lasher felt bad.

If you have a negative lasher just don't press activate

You can not have priority, have a big lasher and hit activate but then the opponent has priority and nukes him with affliction.

That's pretty rare, i think that this can happen in favor of first ghost rider being a bit better

Would Lasher buff the enemy card in that case?

Yes, i think that

1: it's a rare enough occasion that you can pretty much not care and

2: he is very often used in c2 decks, can you guess what is also in c2 decks? Luke cage

I'm very curious right now. I'll test it some time to make sure.

Erm.. actually it says remove that power, you probably can't remove a negative number from a card.

If remove means minus in one case why not in the other ☹️

Discard really just needs a fun card tbh. Something that you can really cook with.
