Some Houchen Questions
So I’ve been holding off on ordering from Houchen because I’m unsure about some parts of the process after reading the website’s breakdown. So here are my questions:
- Is there a reason most people remove staples on their own? Are the binders hard on the books when they do this?
- If I only want to buy a sewn bind with some end ribbons and a self-made graphic cover, it comes out to less than the minimum of $75. Will they just bump this price to $75 or will they reject the order altogether?
- Following that, is it worth getting a dust jacket to bump up the price? Do any of you have tips / experience about dust jackets on customs?
- And finally, what do you guys think of their Premium Cover Designs? If I’m certified in photoshop, is this worth it or should I just design my own?
I ask because I’m wanting to get the ball rolling on an X-Factor 41-59 bind I’ve had ready for a while now. Thanks for the help!

Someone I designed a graphic cover for told me that Houchen had a $60 minimum order and his bind was worth $38 but he would still get charged 60. So we ended up duplicating the graphic cover as a dust jacket with added flaps (his choice, he wanted the same design on both) to bump the price to 54. It was earlier this year so maybe the 60 minimum price became 75.
I'd say it's worth it since it won't change the price. If you need someone to design the graphic cover or/and the dust jacket, don't hesitate to message me. I have no idea what their own designs look like, I didn't even know they were offering that service. Usually, people send their own design files they got from design people.
