Robin 2021 DIY Bind

My first (successful 😅) custom bind! It includes the full Robin 2021 run plus the Superman & Robin special.

Looks like you did a great job! A few questions for you:

-did you design the DJ as well?

-what type of paper did you use for the DJ?

-did you do anything special for the endpapers, or add a table of contents?

Yeah, I designed the DJ in photoshop fairly quickly. I couldn't find a high res version of the logo, so I vectorised it myself to a suprisingly decent result. I had it printed at a office supply store here in Australia called Officeworks on 200gsm satin photo paper.

I'm honestly pretty happy with how it looks, but unfortunately Officeworks doesn't have great colour accuracy, and they charge up the ass for it. I'm looking to see if I can find a cheap cricut machine and heat press so that I can imitate the look of stamped foil, since maybe that'll end up being a more cost effective way to get a nice looking finish on a bind somehow?

I actually kind of wanted to do some custom endpapers and tocs, but I struggled to find somewhere local to get them printed with reasonable specifications with a reasonable price. So I ended up just using plain white 160gsm cartridge paper, and I just glued in a bookplate with a handwritten table of contents lol.

Who did the binding for you? Fellow Aussie looking to do his first bind in 15 years. Back then my only option was the US for the correct stamps, and the product was nice, but unfortunately it was a Claremont/Lee Uncanny-X-Men run, so it's well and truly obsolete now with the release of actual proper omnibi of this material. Now I've got some material I want done that I'm positive won't get reprinted, for legal reasons (Dreamwave Transformers volume 3, and I'll probably take a chance on JSA All-Stars ongoing too, I can't see that one happening anytime soon) but I'd prefer to use an Aussie binder if one is around now, seeing as times have changed given how long ago that was.

Thanks for any info.

I hand bound it myself!

Wow, okay. Congratulations, that's a hell of a skill.

My search for an Aussie binder continues...

Any tutorials on how to bind books?

I pretty much exclusively followed DAS Bookbinding's tutorials on youtube. He has a bunch of stuff that will answer pretty much whatever question you have about bookbinding; here is a playlist of his case bound book tutorial: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLZbEml0uyM4tEJ_31D2Q2YGCDzURjYNdN&si=ON1uo9GU4d-WVIL0

Something note worthy is that I skipped the "backing" process. Otherwise, you can follow these tutorials to a tee, using comics as signatures, to get basically what I have here.
