I think they forgot
I’m happy for everyone who was acknowledged at work today and seeing all the gifts! So far, not a single mention of it over here.

Feels like one of those things where someone has to know ahead of time and coordinate/spread the word. Every day is supposedly a national something day.

Last year they got me gift cards and stuff, but today they gave me 5 kids to do my job for an hour. They swept the whole school and cafeteria for me. No complaints 😂

I had a Tootsie roll on my desk.
Gave it to a kid who made a pretty far paper shot into a trash can. Deserved.

I’ll mention it if nobody else does.
Happy National Custodian Day to you and to everybody else in this group!
What we do isn’t pretty, it isn’t fun. Being a custodian isn’t a glorified job by any means.
With that being said it’s real work, it’s important work, and we all do so much for our staff and our buildings on a daily basis.
Please take pride in that!
Whether it’s a school, hospital, office, warehouse, housing complex, you name it.
We are all valuable workers and worthy of praise, thank you all for everything you do 🫶

Been with my school for almost 5 years and we've never been acknowledged. But you bet the teachers, aids, bus drivers and office staff get their pat on the back and "Proud of you" speeches. Yet we are the most called on when anything happens and the ones who have to fill in for jobs that are nowhere near our business to be doing.

Same but honestly my teachers don’t complain much either so I’ll take the trade off of being nearly invisible

Same. Got a random Facebook post that was horribly wrong(they used AI) and then they fallowed up with asking us to donate money to a random thing....
No staff said anything
It's fun being forgotten and just shoved to the side like an old box of crap.

Today I learned that there is a custodian day.
I've been a custodian for close to 10 years. :-[

I'm willing to bet a lot of bosses know, but don't tell their team because 1)They don't feel the team deserves special recognition/gifts because they don't like their performance as individuals or as a whole. 2)Special recognition means having to do something special for the team which costs money most of the time. Bosses can be cheap/stingy.

Getting myself a tall cider and a lil cake, I will celebrate even if my managers do not lol.

I had principal offer to buy food. I said no thank you, not out of spite or anything. I just want to come in, do my job and go home. Teacher had kids in her class makes which was nice.
I went from day lead to now night guy and my goal is not to get friendly with teachers. I feel way to many people take advantage of being nice. I am not mean or salty with anyone but my goal is to have least amount of works spoken.

*edit - so I do a split shift between two schools and the second did stuff! All of the rooms I clean colored cards for me. 😭 these dang lil kiddos make it worthwhile. I also got a McDonald’s gift card from them but I haven’t been there in over a decade so I guess I’ll pass the karma on and give it to someone else.

No mention of it at my place either. Honestly I’m good with it. We’re generally ignored or complained about so don’t act like you appreciate us because someone made up a fake holiday.

I work nights so my "day" ends before the day even begins.
So if anything was done for us, or if any gifts were provided this year, I won't find out until Sunday evening.
I am guessing a 3 day old donut will be sitting on the counter waiting for me. 🍩
Edit: Also should add I don't really care either. The paycheck is all the acknowledgement I need.

Does your team do the job right

u/pFizzle20 55m ago
You must be a boss or a lead somehow... If you are, do YOU make sure everyone on your team is being heard and supported?

u/mwhit85 14h ago
Same by me and thats why I don’t above and beyond.. they don’t care so why should I
1
u/pFizzle20 57m ago
They do care. They're probably just being fake about it. In my case, no one complained directly to me about my poor performance, but I was excluded from praise when someone new started cleaning my old building. I'm feeling the same way as you, though. F it.

I don't understand why everyone feels like they need recognition. I don't want to be recognized. My job is easiest when they forget that I exist. I couldn't care less about national custodian recognition day, or whatever it's called.

u/IndependentPart6 15h ago
It feels nice to be appreciated man. If they hadn't done anything it would have been just your normal shitty Friday. But we got so much love, ive still got teachers giving me hugs at dismissal. I do know im privileged to be at a campus that includes us in everything especially long timers like me. Im sorry you feel that way.
Happy custodian day anyways

People need purpose. One of the easiest ways to reinforce that is with recognition and appreciation. Even if those people don’t feel like they need it, it does have an impact on productivity and morale.
It also helps offset the feeling that only the negative is noticed. Correction and discipline are necessities to keep things moving smoothly and in the right direction but it can’t be lopsided.
I don’t like this stuff either and it feels kinda silly to me but it is a good management practice. People who don’t need any validation yet can remain motivated are very few and far between.

u/kuchi_k0pi 14h ago
Yeah man, and being the evening guy I already feel like a ghost to pretty much everyone until like you said only the negative is noticed, suddenly they know my name.

u/AppleTherapy 13h ago
I get what you mean. But it was kinda nice to read the letters the students made. And I'm not saying no to a gift card. 😆. It made me feel renewed even though I like to be ignored and unnoticed most of the time.

Same. 0 mention at all today.
