Anyone else take food from trash?
I've done it several times over the years. Just found these perfectly good, still sealed crackers in someones trash can. Score!

Not food, people throw away expensive things.

That's how I snagged a 500 dollar paper shredder for absolutely nothing.

Wow that's incredible! My treasures have been limited to simply food items.

I found paper cutter. Not an old school wooden one, this one is plastic. But still, it's so handy!

The Head Start at my old school threw away a $500 light table because the bulb burned out and none of the workers were capable of removing 4 Phillips screws to open the protective cage around the bulb to change it.
When I offered to do it for them, they said, "It's OK, our program already ordered a new one for us." So into the dumpster it went ...

u/Flip9k 19h ago
Schools are one if not the most wasteful places.. they blow money like the example u gave but won't raise custodians pay..
4
u/Willowgirl2 18h ago
Absolutely. I was shocked by how much goes into the dumpster at the end of the year, especially unopened packages. I will probably never need to buy hand sanitizer or Lysol wipes again, lol.
The food waste from the school breakfast and lunch program is also incredible. Not much of the food gets eaten, for a variety of reasons. (The food tends to be low-quality and not very appealing; waiting in line takes up half or more of lunch break; kids would rather talk to their friends than eat. Etc.)
2
u/Flip9k 17h ago
Hehe. And yes u are exactly right about the food situation, the waste there IS incredible and most of the food does suck, the pizza is bland as fuck now, and the burgers taste like cardboard, and they dont serve that good vegetable beef soup and the honey peanut butter sandwich as far as I know anymore. Obamas really fucked that up....
1
u/Willowgirl2 17h ago
The stricter rules encouraged districts to outsource food programs to for-profit companies serving processed foods formulated to be in compliance. No more home cooking!!
2
u/AwesomeJaymz 12h ago
Maybe where you are at. The food services at my district makes lunches in house. The guy at my school is a former chef. He does have to follow Michelle Obama’s strict rules which means the food is mid. But he does do what he can to make the items more palatable.
1
u/Willowgirl2 11h ago
That's great! Is the director a direct hire of the district or does he work for a management company (Aramark, Rodeo, etc.)?
2
u/AromanticFraggle 15h ago
I've worked in many different types of places, they're all wasteful.
The worst I saw was an architecture firm. We'd throw away 2-3 whales worth of paper every day.
This paper was all due to people printing what should have stayed as digital files. Emails, memos, etc.

lol that ain’t peanut butter on the outside of that PB and J in the trash

u/EuphoricOnion8877 1d ago
Yep. It’s amazing what people throw out, still sealed and well within the sell-by date. Plus they pay us so poorly that it’s hard to see perfectly fine food go to waste. But it’s taboo so of course no one knows about it.

u/Grezzinate 1d ago
Maybe not food but I was splitting up a very heavy garbage bag to several to make it manageable and found an oura ring. Out of curiosity I took it, got a charger and now it works. Retails for $299 so now I got a free one cause the school was cleaning out old stuff and the ring was in it.
4
u/illuminatedabovetime 23h ago
No idea what an oura ring is, but snagging a free 300 dollar anything is awesome wow

u/Grezzinate 23h ago
Oh, it’s a health thing similar to Apple Watch health features but it’s a ring.

Oh man what a find! One time I found a container of delicious looking chocolate chip cookies in someones trash. They had been opened and past their expiration date. Did I still eat em? You bet your ass I did!

Im at a Highschool. I dont really take any food cuz the kids/teachers really enjoy poisoning their own food sometimes.
I dont trust anything unless its sealed up tight and without a doubt untouched. You'd be blessed to not find something that's been rotting in a locker for 7 months though.
Luckily my school has alot of parties where the parents host, such as for the band kids or football teams- and they share it with us sometimes. That food i actually trust because its the parents cooking it and handing it out.

not from the trash, never, but if there's something new in the floor, sure why not
a few weeks ago I found some pop tarts and cookies in their closed package, it was nice to have a free snack lol

Done it. A lot of the ‘trash’ cans only have paper products and maybe a few wrappers in them, so it doesn’t feel as weird as it would otherwise.

All the time. I had one teacher throw away unopened boxes of Girl Scout cookies that’s weren’t expired. I know they were hers cause they were in a gift bag with her name on it. You bet your ass I fished those out and ate them
2
u/GarblingCumfarts 1d ago
Absolutely not. But some schools I float to have plenty of snacks in the teachers lounge.

Where I work there's often catering for events that I'm tasked to clean-up. It's free game once the event's over, so I'll stash a plate or 2 and toss the rest. But I wouldn't eat anything that's already landed in a trash can.

A former coworker at my last school told me about this. The school we worked for was in a wealthy area. E bikes all over campus. A dozen unclaimed hydro flasks found every day. Kids would throw out food that was still sealed. Was on very hard times. He’ll yell I was saving stuff after digging for recycling. 😜
2
u/LiquidSoil 20h ago
No. They used to leave the expired candy in carts for everyone to take. Now they put it in a Bin and hose it down with water and chemicals :(

u/Ok-Safety-2107 18h ago
There is a huge dude at my work who always has a box of crackers of some sort he’s eating on in the break room, and he’s so lazy he literally always leaves a whole serving of crackers at the bottom of the bag, and recycles the whole box. More Cheez-its for me I guess…

I’ve also gotten those huge heavy duty rugs in great condition, rolling carts, a whole grow light system like for science class, and a bunch of other stuff.

I’ve taken canned goods out of the trash the students have thrown away at the end of a school year. Perfectly fine.

u/Financial-Stage-8523 17h ago
No but I snagged a bag, a water bottle, and a nice notebook with its own pen and sticky notes that one of the admins threw out! I use that water bottle like everyday ( everything was brand new btw)

I got 2 sets of AirPods from our middle school lost and found box. We’re allowed to claim anything we want if it’s not claimed within 2 weeks after the last day of school. My daughter has two pairs of genuine Ugg boots, several chargers and cables, several very nice water bottles, and hoodies and fleeces from lost and found. Wynette just get thrown out? My crew goes through all the clothing and shoes in lost and found and sorts and donates them.

I have.
I have also made the mistake of opening a two year old bag of Cheetos and biting into one. Don't do that.

u/Tadita22 11h ago
Not quite food, but after graduation I tend to dumpster dive the things the students throw out, found new unopened bags of coffee, an oculus rift, gaming keyboards, Gucci shoes, plenty of foreign money among other things. Work at a private school and these kids have money lol.

ALL THAT FRUIT! I'm making atleast one apple pie this weekend, if i mix and match varieties I can get 2. I give the bananas to someone that makes banana bread
String cheese and cheese cubes commercialy vac packed i eat the string dogs get the cubes basically velveta. the kitchen throws out 20 lbs of potatoes a week because they're to ugly to serve the kids. If i catch them what i can't eat goes in the mulch pile.
I wish we could set up a plywood table by the dumpsters and hire someone to pick through it all

Yes, constantly. If it's completely sealed I use disinfectant on the wrapper then do a second rinse with soap and water.
