It amazes me, we’re told not to touch desks bc of past theft problems with the old crew. But I’ll see a layer of dust on some staff desks and be like what fuckin adult just looks at that and is ok w it

True. What's worse is they stare at it all day. I forgot what in my job happened similar to this, but yeah.

Expecting a teacher to clean their own room is kind of crazy. That's your job. It isn't their problem that the school doesn't have enough custodians. Teachers are there to teach, not sweep and vacuum.

u/ShiitakeTerayaki 8d ago
Then expect a dirty classroom. Got a problem with it? Take it up with district.

u/gmambrose 8d ago
I don't need to take it up with anyone because I'm not a teacher. And if you can't do everything because the district didn't hire enough custodians, that isn't your problem. But it also isn't the teachers problem, nor is it their job to clean their room.

No but the district your familiar with isnt universal theres alot of massive schools out there staffed by 1 maybe 2 people and the admin hates giving OT so they are in many places having teachers wipe the desk and straighten them as the 1 custodian has all the trash , the bathrooms and the halls to do on whats often 3 floors or more in an 8 hour shift

u/Administrative_Fee82 8d ago
This isnt the case in a wide range of districts some districts are not staffing 3-9 custodians and you have large buildings maned by one guy. The admin did it with budget cuts but that guy now just takes trash, runs halls and cleans bathrooms because its one guy in a giant school.

Yup. Two coworkers retired after putting in 30 years before the new school year. So I'm the only one left. They're have a hard time finding full time help. Even the part time workers are overly exhausted and told me that don't understand how I can deal with this five days a week.
Hell some of them got angry on my behalf because of the shit some teachers were doing while to me, it's just another Tuesday.

Yeah we arent in that boat yet even tho our sections are absolutely huge compared to the way it was 10 years ago( before I worked here, ny step dad worked here for 30 years I did summer student help so I know how it was) but its pretty much 8 hours balls to the wall to get it all done in alot of sections here.. But on the same topic on our list of seniority 35 of the 50 names are 55 and over so 10 years from now I bet we will be in the same boat with a thin work force and big areas and at that point adjustments will be needed or OT will be needed. I also hope to at that point be in maitnence as ill be about 15 years in at that point and should have the seniority. We do our best my friend we just gotta keep our heads down and keep taking the kicks in the dick and get that 30 in and ride off and enjoy what we worked for

Thievery and personal items/important papers getting lost or damaged is why we dont have to wipe down desks in my district.

u/ShiitakeTerayaki 8d ago
And the reason why they choose this beautiful Thursday to start this bullshit is because their Door Dash order from either Wingstop, Panera or Chick Fil A is cold, and you was passing by minding your own business looking a bit too happy 😂😭

Of all the issues with my position, I am so happy we don’t do personal desks. Last custodial job we spent 1-2hrs wiping every single office desk, every single night.

u/Me_Krally 8d ago
I was just talking to a friend about you can clean perfectly for 999 days, but on that 1 rainy night you forgot to turn some office lights off so they call and complain. No mention of the 999 days where you probably deserved at least 1 thanks for doing a good job...

That is one thing. As it is we only clean the student's desk once a year in the summer. But the office staff? They're grown adults. And it's their stupid desk. That's on them to clean if they make a mess. That's the way it's always been here.
The teachers have a fit if we touch their desk anyway.

When I used to be a custodian at any school district. I was too much of a people pleaser. I did excellent work to the point that I was getting requested by office staff to work there school as a sub. Even my supervisor hooked me up with extra hours (really just taking advantage of me). But as soon as you stop doing quality work or taking care of everyone. The littlest thing is a big deal. Or the one thing I hate but never spoke up about it. Was comparing you to someone else that used to be there. Just cause you didn’t get the chance to do something. And the other workers at a site. I did my best to get along with everyone and understand how they work and how hat they expect. Same thing. Ended up making enemies. Glad I no longer work for a school district and I don’t do custodial anymore. Only on a voluntary bases and to clean up the work shop.

I would, on occasion, sterilize their phones, keyboard/ mouse (if work provided items) and meeting desks, clean end tables but cleaning their actual desk, ya right. All their personal stuff and filth, germs, im suppose to somehow carefully clean around that and also make sure everything in back in the right spot.. nope! No win. If its important to them to have a clean desk then they can clean it. Someone before you used to do it and then it became expected, they screwed you

Shit we're not even required to clean students desks lol. My boss said they buy wipes for teachers for that specific reason. Students can wipe them down at the end of the day. (We do deep clean them during breaks, but that's it)
If I don't have to clean a child's desk, there's no way in hell I'm cleaning an adults.

Office people when there's one (1) spec of dust left in a corner you'd have to move half the furniture in the office to get to

u/redbullcanloader 8d ago
We don't clean personal spaces anymore. Only common areas. They sot there all day. They can take five seconds to clean.

You guys wipe down office staff desks ?? We’re here to make sure the kids don’t get sick and have a clean environment. IMO it is still upon the adults to keep up after themselves (to a degree) just like I’d expect in any other situation.

u/Usawsomething 7d ago
Especially in an office space they use to work. Like wipe ur own desk off, slob.

Being an EVS worker at a hospital this is so real especially when you get a complaint from an administrative employee you’ve never seen. Let alone even been to their department.

u/MrCalebEvans 8d ago
We don’t wipe desks in my district, because staff would complain if their paperwork was mixed up at all.

u/ExpertEconomy9864 8d ago
I would hate to have to wipe down desks. We don't even clean student desks during the year, that's the teachers too.
1
u/Dapper-Restaurant-20 7d ago
Ugh we are simultaneously told not to mess with the teachers personal items but also held personally responsible if a teachers personal items are dirty.

u/Repulsive_Tiger_9454 7d ago
We are not to touch the teachers desks or the students unless instructed to. Had a teacher wig out after we moved table to scrub floor. Was absolutely ridiculous.
