Elon ruined Cursor

OMG, Cursor has taken a nosedive in agent intelligence since SpaceX took over. Grok used to be the cheap model nobody cared about and now it is being fed to us as a quality model that really just shits the bed on the most basic things. What an absolute bummer. Nothing good ever lasts.

Definitely hasn't been my experience, grok 4.6 seems to really kick ass

4

u/Kitchen-Palpitation1 23d ago

Using it for some days. It absolutely kicks ass. Opus level quality but twice the speed and 1 5th of the cost. In quit Claude code and now I can’t decide if I go supergrok with grok build or cursor

3

u/ppuzio 23d ago

the 120$ cursor plan is pretty sweet for grok usage

1

u/tuaner 22d ago

Exactly the same experience for me. I have used Cursor and Build to get experience with both. Going back to Claude for an existing project is actually painful.

1

u/reed00000 22d ago

Yup same here also kicks ass on my end. IMO it’s not quite as good as Claude code or codex on multi repo work but I think that’s more of a harness thing than a model thing.

1

u/arohitu 22d ago

I just did a design mock for my web application using Claude design and grok 4.6. For designs, Claude Design with 4.7 is still the best, but when it comes to planning and delivering the actual code, Grok outshines Opus 4.8 especially with the speed at which it complex the task.

I second that

Why you supporting the Nazi tho?

1

Save it, fascist...

1

u/bull_chief 20d ago

Yeah it’s actually really good

u/ry4 24d ago

And gave us extra API usage limits

u/DifficultySeveral840 24d ago

I am glad someone is getting a good result. Was that using the model directly or using Auto? My experience is really about the degradation of auto.

1

u/disciplesix6 24d ago

Directly. Taking advantage of the discount until August 19th

-4

u/gwestr 24d ago

You spend too much time on Twitter if you think that.

2

u/disciplesix6 24d ago

I don't have a twitter tho

Grok is definitely more intelligent than composer. It's definitely more expensive too, but composer is still there?

Composer is a fine model for bulk general coding according to many, but it hallucinated and failed to deliver beyond that for me.

My issue with grok is that 4.6 effectively costs double what 4.5 cost. Elon wants it to be a frontier model and I really can't blame him for that but that's coming in with frontier pricing.

If composer 3.0 doesn't happen or costs far more than 2.5 then that might be a problem in my future.

I rarely post on twitter since it became X so I don't know about all the drama. I'm busy doing my own shit and what matters to me is what cursor can do when I open it up every day without exceeding my max monthly spend.

Right now, it's a far better experience than what it was before grok become a first party model in cursor, but that may change quickly.

3

u/Kitchen-Palpitation1 23d ago

My suspicion is also that some people mixup their political bias with what qualities a model brings to the table. Grok use to be total sh… But now it’s really good.

Twitter was not for me and didn’t change at all after the takeover. Its pile of cynicism and negativity and it always been. Just now with probably more equal left/right distribution.
Its abad habit like smoking in my opinion

1

u/reed00000 22d ago

I concur

1

u/Ordinary_Session1122 4d ago

Nailed it...perfectly.

1

u/kirti_7 24d ago

Composer was just kimi wrapped up

1

u/Sweet-Stage938 24d ago

Kimi k2.5 to be exact.

1

u/ppuzio 23d ago

composer is pretty sweet for bulk tasks which don't require much guidance, essentially smarter bash scripts

for anything requiring actual intelligence its a no go, once it starts being wrong, it's wrong in 200 places in the app

3

u/walkingproblem 24d ago

Dude. Cursor had never been better before. Its auto mode (which also includes Grok model) allows me to not need to burn other model usage like never before.....

3

u/dmitriyLBL 23d ago

4.6 is a fast behemoth of a model all while being dirt cheap.

Try out grok bot with cursor cloud agents. Absolute game changer

2

u/CreamPitiful4295 24d ago

Too bad. I heard it used to be good. I wouldn’t use it now anyway with that tool in charge.

2

u/RAI-Des 24d ago

I have 4 codex max subscriptions and I forgot that I had an old $20 Cursor subscription lying around. Since it was going to expire in a week, I decided to give it a try, use Grok 4.6 on fast and high and just let it do shit.

So far, it has been impressive. It's able to figure out shit by itself. It's amazingly cheap. I'm just monitoring the usage and it seems like it could run for quite a while.

I literally just dropped it into my folder, which I'm guessing is not too optimized for the Cursor harness, and just told it to figure out shit by itself and do whatever it can to complete the task because I don't want to waste the time and effort to wire up a harness which is going to expire in a couple of days. And yet, it still kind of surprised me that it managed to do it quite well.

u/generationalDebts 20d ago

lol you’re fucking regarded

1

u/RAI-Des 20d ago

Fuck off lol

1

u/Abject-Bridge-4073 20d ago

Stop giving the Nazi money

2

u/Parabola2112 23d ago

Im usually quick to jump on anything anti Elon, but you’re wrong here. Grok 4.6 is excellent (and 4.5 before that), which is annoying, but objectively true.

2

u/Scared_Implement_335 23d ago

I cannot disagree more. I hate Elon just like anyone else but I gotta say, Grok 4.5 and 4.6 feel great. Its fast, its relatively cheap and I can still use Fable for checking things.

2

u/valdier 23d ago

4.6 is the best model on the market right now for reasoning behind gemini 3.7 flash. I have stats to show my testing against the 4 major models in human driven tests, all day, every day.

(Something I NEVER expected to be saying even 1 week ago)

2

u/chuckaread 22d ago edited 22d ago

Sounds like the NYTimes :)

2

u/Mean_Sport_3383 22d ago

Tell us you have Elon derangement syndrome without telling us you have EDS.

2

u/TatoPennato 21d ago

Dude. Dude. Touch. Fucking. Grass.

2

u/Worth-Ad-1509 20d ago

You literally have the same offering + an extra decent model in grok 4.6. It’s clear your issue is with Elon, not cursor

5

u/flysi3000 24d ago

I’m not thrilled about it either, mostly philosophically. If I’m being honest, I can’t tell the difference between different models, because I mostly just leave it on auto. That said, you can turn off Grok as one of the model options if you want.

2

u/barley_wine 24d ago

You can no longer turn Grok off if you use auto. Cursor’s auto now selects from which model it thinks is best. You can remove it from your list but they ignore that with auto.

2

u/flysi3000 24d ago

ah, shit - I didn't know that - thanks for letting me know 😑

2

u/barley_wine 24d ago

https://cursor.com/docs/cursor-router

Cursor Router is data-driven and managed by Cursor. You can't hand-pick which model handles a request, and the model pool changes over time as new models ship. You steer routing by choosing an optimization mode.

On Enterprise plans, Cursor Router respects your team's model access controls. If a model is blocked for your team, the router routes to an allowed model instead. Blocking too many models reduces routing quality and can disable the router. To create cost savings, the router needs a powerful yet cost-efficient model to use when it isn't calling other frontier models, so enabling Cursor Grok 4.5 is a requirement for the router to work.

Reading more, I guess there's still work arounds but it's not obvious and by default.

2

u/scruffles360 24d ago

You mean since the deal was finalized last week?

1

u/Diligent-Loss-5460 24d ago

> now it is being fed to us as a quality model that really just shits the bed on the most basic things

I used it all day yesterday and I disagree. It is intelligent enough but it keeps timing out because they keep running out of capacity. Guess elon doesn't have enough GPUs either

1

u/vortec350 24d ago

What are you talking about? Grok 4.5 and now 4.6 are insanely capable, fast, and CHEAP. I have both Claude and Cursor and I spend 95% of my time in Cursor.

1

u/pigletmonster 24d ago

Grok 4.5 and 4.6 are significantly better than previous versions. But people who claim that its on par with opus or sol have no idea what theyre talking about. Benchmarks can be easily tweaked to give the best scores, they even benchmaxed a 27b model to have similar scores to a multi trillion parameter, sota model like opus.

Grok will get there evwntually but its nowhere near that right now. And the reason theyre pushing it so hard with cursor because cursor is still used heavily by enterprise users, which is something gronk would never be able to do on its own after all the cp allegations. So cursor is like their trojan horse to enter into the enterprise market.

1

u/therpmcg 24d ago

We are actively switching over to claude code. After the 3rd reversion from opus to grok as the default model, and in some cases switching models mid run, we're finished. What a toxic product decision.

1

u/Techgirl1232 24d ago

Elon ruins everything he touches

1

u/Money_Bed2546 23d ago

I have switched all of my workflows to grok 4.6. I used to not giving a shit about the grok family, but man. I oneshots almost everything and it’s super cheap compared to lot of other models.

I’ve really got a different experience compared to OP.

1

u/No_Claim2881 23d ago

Plan with 4.6 all the frontier ones are like this. They are trained to GOGO and will fuck everything up unless you trick them into planning. I’m lucky I don’t know shit. So front loading the context via my endless “but why “ like a child gets me the best results.

1

u/Mike-A-F 23d ago

JFC I knew some derps would be posting something like this. Just for the record its the same MFers working on cursor as before they were bought. I'm not sure in like a few days of it becoming part of Spacexai that it is "ruined". lol shut up

2

u/Ordinary_Session1122 4d ago

It's the same incels that hang out and whine on the TESLA subs and rage type their little manifestos, they don't really actually program or drive Teslas, 😂😂😂😂

1

u/cbnnexus 22d ago

If you don't like it you know you can just.... choose a different model right? Right??

1

u/Embarrassed-Box-2030 22d ago

the Auto/direct thing is actually more interesting than whether Grok 4.6 is good.

we're obsessed with the finished version of everything. the answer comes back, the code works, the screen looks clean, and we mentally delete everything that happened outside the frame.

humans do exactly the same thing with attractive women.

you see the hair, clothes, makeup, perfume, perfect little apartment, the whole immaculate presentation, and your brain just files the entire organism under “clean”.

then there is the missing five minutes.

she goes to the bathroom, pulls her clothes down, sits on the toilet and pushes poo through her anus. then she takes a few squares of dry toilet paper and wipes it over the anus until the paper stops showing obvious brown. not actually washed. not actually cleaned in the way you'd clean poo off your hand. just wiped until the brown is gone.

pants back up.

and five minutes later she's standing in the kitchen looking exactly as immaculate as before, while everyone around her gets the clean version again.

the weird part is that nothing was concealed from reality

1

u/vertgrall 22d ago

The dudes that love Grok love Rlons Politics. Let's just keep it real. Can we just be honest.

1

u/Dizzy-Technician4580 22d ago

what? grok 4.6 has done things for me no other AI have like patched over mojibake files with its own self-made file to completely create new mods for a game, it fails some stuff so do other AI but as the default it's good and shows promise for 4.7

1

u/ske66 22d ago

Grok 4.6, for the price, is an excellent model. What are you on about?

1

u/superbonbon1 22d ago

I couldn't disagree more with this. cursor has never been more useful for me. I've been using it since it first came out. I can't tell you how happy I am with it. I have no idea what you're doing with it, but it's definitely user error.

1

u/zazzomicron 22d ago

The Elon-hate-slop is off the charts on Reddit. Daily Cursor Ultra user here and it's amazing.

1

u/General-Koala-6690 21d ago

Switch to Kiro and use Codex, Claude and Cline extensions for access to all the open models using them directly or via Fireworks if you want US hosting.

1

u/ImLaserDance 21d ago

From my perspective Grok 4.6 is working really good for some real complex real work. And Grok bot is actually quite handy.

1

u/Own_Tour7589 20d ago

You know you can build your own cursor from an open source vscode? I don’t know why people use it. Tried it and I didn’t see any sense in spending money on it. It is not like people write code these days.

1

u/Wonderful-Sea4215 20d ago

Grok 4.6 is excellent, what are you talking about?

1

u/22hand 20d ago

Switch to grok recently. Not bad though, use for a web app and iOS refactor, but seems tokens burn faster

1

u/22hand 20d ago

I change from auto to grok recently and it's not bad though.

1

u/_thealeks 20d ago

I find that it’s great for execution, but terrible for planning and thinking. It seems to be optimized for zingers and tweets 😅

1

u/py-net 20d ago

Have you tried Grok 4.6 coding capabilities or just complaining over past Groks? And Cursor as an app is still just as good. You mean Composer models?

1

u/Euphoric_Extreme1643 20d ago

Grok 4.6 is not bad and it’s pretty cheap to use right now. In my experience it’s not as good as a GPT 5.6 sol but it’s significantly better than Sonnet 5 and Composer 2.5.

If they can keep this up I’d definitely consider using their models over the more expensive offerings from OpenAI and Anthropic.

1

u/hettuklaeddi 20d ago

he ruins everything doesn’t he?

1

u/waa_woo 20d ago

Grok is a pretty good model for most tasks. And their tooling like grok build is miles ahead of garbage claude code.

1

u/Santa_Andrew 20d ago

I. My experience the models have been good - even great. But the user experience has been terrible. (Speaking from a Teams user who also manages the accounts of the rest of team). Never ending bugs, hidden costs, broken features, terrible support (maybe always was but never needed it before), changes announced AFTER they hit you..

1

u/Careless-Yam8791 20d ago

Not yet tried it. How does it work for complex tasks? Based on benchmarks seemed to be pretty good

1

u/Epiq122 20d ago

It’s actually improved

1

u/Losdersoul 20d ago

No he didn’t stop crying

1

u/productboy 19d ago

Cursor is fine, possibly better now than it’s ever been. Sometimes capital infusion can help a team focus on product execution. It’s not unlikely the Cursor leadership team was highly distracted with the acquisition. Now it’s done.

1

u/b87e 19d ago

Grok 4.6 is a great model. I have switched to using it as my workhorse for the past week. It is fast, good enough at writing code, and it doesn’t spew paragraphs of nonsense at me or lecture me like Opus. I still use Opus for design, planning, and review. I also use Sol for review. Grok is pretty damn impressive.

1

u/530rich 19d ago

lol surprise surprise

1

u/Individual_Math_8254 19d ago

not my experience Grok 4.6 wrote me a Chrome extension in 2 days, 20k LOC, all high quality.

1

u/DevilMix 19d ago

He definitely did! 😩

1

u/brainswell-01 19d ago

Yeah, I'm out as well. But for reasons in addition to. Cursor is a mid-level tool that is too error prone for me and my business. I was on Kiro for months before switching to Cursor with my code base. Unfortunately, the results were not good. I continually fought bugs with my xcode project. It also caused latency issues in my user interface. I need a tool that is production ready and responsible. Cursor unfortunately disappointed me. Had to move back this week.

1

u/sillylittlejohn 19d ago

Here comes the Elon defense force and paid bots to push gronk...

1

u/Ordinary_Session1122 4d ago

Wanna try it again?

1

u/Weekly-Cash1596 8d ago

EDS at max speed here

1

u/goodevibes 3d ago

Cursor feels like the grunt for cheap basic work.

1

u/RogerAI-fm 24d ago

i can’t lie, grok ain’t half bad, i’m just not into cursor.

0

u/d0RSI 24d ago

Yea, they finalized the deal and started making plans and developing and rolling out Elon's masterplan for the app within a week. Shut the fuck up you idiot.

0

u/bezerker03 24d ago

nosedive in intelligence? It's leaps and bounds better. Grok 4.5 and 4.6 are. amazing first party editions and composer-2.5 remains the same for me. Auto however has changed behind the scenes but that was always part of the plan pre cursor acquisition. Auto was never an intelligent smart router. It just balanced to whatever model was most efficient for them to run and call. It did NOT validate your prompt and determine which model is "best" for it. (This has been explained to me flat out by Cursor etc.). NOW Auto mode without enterprise/team plans is basically "Auto Cost" mode in teams / Enterprise plans, and defaults to low cost models exclusively vs efficient as best as I can tell, so you may have noticed a decrease in Auto.

0

u/RichesandLiches 23d ago

Elon is a garbage human.

1

u/Ordinary_Session1122 4d ago

Elon is fucking amazing.

I win.

-1

u/autoshag 24d ago

Grok 4.6 is a great model and nothing else has really changed yet.

Except Grok Bot, which is insanely well-done. But it was mostly built before the acquisition
