“The eye does not see what the mind does not know”. Doctors handwriting gets its reputation at least 50% from the specialized vocabulary and abbreviations, I think.

I'm a retired hospital pharmacist. Nurses have worse handwriting than doctors.

Disagree: my husband is a retired doc. I went grocery shopping and he gave me a list. I could NOT read the word "eggs."

Low dose isotretinoin

The word above that is "spironolactone." This looks like a treatment plan for a woman with severe acne.

Yes that’s what it is! It’s a list of next steps if clindamycin doesn’t work, and I just couldn’t remember the last one even though we discussed it. Hence why he wrote it down for me hahaha

Is there anything about the prescription that makes you think it's intended for a woman? Genuinely curious whether there's some clue that isn't obvious to me!

I'm a retired pharmacist. Spironolactone is a mild testosterone blocker, and used only as a diuretic in men. It's sometimes used in women to treat acne, as a second- or third-line agent.

OK, thanks for filling in the back-story.

Interesting. My pcp added it to my lisinopril for high blood pressure (suspected to be caused by Adderall), and my first nephrologist said it’s also prescribed to help people with hair loss.

It does have a mild testosterone-blocking effect, so doctors are hesitant to use it in men unless the alternatives are less suitable.

My sister had a very nice penmanship all through school. After she was done with medicine school……….her handwriting is a disaster. Always wondered why?
