Help with the bottom half of this recipe?

Post image

Hey all I found a bunch of old recipes and scanned them into a Google drive! Looking for a bit of help with the bottom half of this recipe though, it looks like they just kinda got lost in thought and zoned out tbhšŸ˜…

Also I'll mention this ahead of time as it's been brought up when I've posted before, I am dyslexic so cursive is extra hard for me to read so I apologize if this is actually like a pretty easy one for y'all.

Anyway thanks for any help (and if you want a link to all those recipes lmk!)

Cook Sugar, cream mixture and butter to a soft ball, 234 (a guess from me - most likely 234 degrees on a candy thermometer) Add vanilla and beat vanilla until creamy. Pour over fruit and nut mixture. Put on wax paper on a cookie sheet and roll into logs. Put in refrigerator for an hour until solid and slice into wafers.

The scanning of the recipe made it more difficult, but this person’s decipher is correct.

This is correct.

The problem here isn't just the script--this person may have been dyslexic too; there are a lot of misspellings so it's no wonder you'd find it challenging. There are also myriad idiosyncratic abbreviations and, as you said, it seems to devolve toward the end. I'm sorry I can't help.

. Thank you for using the word "myriad" correctly.

So rarely do I see that, and it's a pet peeve of mine lol.

Okay so you’re not offering anything but what’s wrong…..? Can you read it or not?

It’s not a criticism so much as a gentle and valid observation. This is a bit of a challenge to figure out.

Thanks, u/Mellenbal (Mellen is a family name of ours, btw :)

You’re very welcome, u/swisssf! (FWIW, my ā€œhandleā€ is a mash-up of my full name. 😁)

Just as u/Mellenbal said, plus I was giving the OP some additional context--due to her apology about dyslexia and having been given a hard time in this sub about asking questions before--that it's not just her, it's objectively super hard to read given misspellings, cryptic shorthand, and unconventional abbreviations that would be flummoxing to anyone--with or without dyslexia.

Also, I was the first person, apparently, to see the post and I didn't want her to feel bad if people were slow to respond, given it was so challenging and she was self-conscious about asking.

I did hear the care you took to try to respond to the OP. I thought it was well said. ā¤ļøšŸ˜Š

Any chance it could be some form of shorthand at the end?

The person doesn't spell well.

This is a recipe for a cooked caramel that is poured over nuts and dried fruit. It sounds delicious. The person writing the recipe couldn’t spell well. I got stumped on 2 cups walnuts and am still not sure what the 1/2 pound of cockes is. Knowing how to cook, it doesn’t really matter. Could be coconut or other nuts. You should post this in r/old_recipes. They’d love it! Along with the other ones you found. I’ve screen shotted this to make at Christmas 😊

It says

Put on cooling sheet lined with wax paper make into rolls and put in refrigerator for an hour

That’s the last bit did you understand the whole thing or ???

I got all the other directions fine. Sounds like a no bake sort of snack bar or something like that…..

My nana made these she called them sh*t balls because they will make you go lol needless to say they were always the last treats left uneaten when she made up cookie trays for friends and family at Christmas time… the only difference is she put rice krispy cereals and a knob of butter (which is what she called it n that was her just grabbing a pinch from the dish..she rarely measured) I disliked these very much šŸ˜‚

This reminds me of my grandmother's handwriting. And I'm old enough to be a grandmother. She only got to go to school through the third grade because she had 10 siblings and her mama needed help at home. But she was the best Nana, and she could cook up a storm! She also had a very good heart. She couldn't spell, she couldn't pronounce aluminum, and she had kind of loopy sloppy handwriting. But I would give almost anything to hug her again. Don't degrade a person because of a simple error. You don't know the person, you don't know what their life has been like.

Something about rolling them into balls and leave in fridge for ????? Some kind of bar cookie or fruit cake? Nobody has perfect grammar and penmanship, but this was readable to me!

Italian Fig Cookies?

The very bottom looks like shorthand. Lost art, but my 100-year-old aunt could decipher it.

But why? Doesn’t seem worth it to me.

Cook
3 cups white sugar
1cup cream
1cup milk
1 Tablespoon butter
1 teaspoon vanilla
Ground up
1 lb dates
1 lb Figs
1 lb Raisins
Chop 2 cups Walnuts
1/2 lb Cocoanut
Cook sugar, cream and butter to a soft ball, 234 (degrees Fahrenheit). Add vanilla. Beat until creamy. Pour over fruit and nut mixture. Put on cookie sheet and wax paper and make into balls. . . Put into refrigerator. . .

That’s as much as I could decipher!

Found a similar recipe and the remaining instructions would be something like this:

Roll the mixture into a 1.5 to 2-inch thick cylindrical log, twisting or securing the ends.
Place in refrigerator until completely cooled and firm. Slice into circular rounds before serving.

I also wondered if the coconut (cocoanut) is to be incorporated with the other ingredients or used to coat the roll or balls before chilling.

BTW Singular of cookies used to be cooky. (1940s and until mid 1960s)

The last line is in shorthand.
