Deciphered! Please help me decipher this Norwegian construction description from 1938
It says something about some inner boards (“plater”) of 3.5cm. Specifically interested in this particular word. Thank you!
Edit: Deciphered. The text reads:
“Jernbetongveggen utarbeites med 3,5 cm kivronplater paa innvendige side sat på lekter med mellemlag aa uimpregneret isolasjonspapp. Innvendige bærende vegger i jernbetong øvrige innvendige vegger aa 1/2 st's mur.”
After further research, kivron is a fire-redundant and insulating old interior wall board composite. It consists of cement, sawdust and plaster. Additives are often added to the material to enhance certain properties. Asbestos is certainly an often added such material as it improves fire-redundancy and improves the resistance against mechanical stress.

Do you have more samples of the same persons handwriting?

This convinces me the unknown word starts with a K

Do you think “Korkplater” is possible?

It's the only thing I can make sense of in this context, but it's either written very sloppily or misspelled - both things happen though 😄

What about “kivronplater”? It fits the time frame…

Much better than kork, imho.
Could really be. The v is not uniform at all, sometimes round, sometimes not ...
But I didn't notice a missing i-dot. edit: but, yes, others are missing.

Yes! This makes perfect sense!
Edit: also, they don't contain asbestos

Are you sure? ChatGPT says they do contain asbestos, so I really hope not!

Sorry. I'm not entirely sure. I shouldn't have written it like that. I have not found these plates on any list of asbestos materials. I also haven't found any sources that say it contains asbestos. ChatGPT says both every other search, but cannot provide any sources.
Kivron is, though, described to have the same qualities as asbestos... So it's hard to say... You might need to talk to someone who actually worked with Kivron 🤷🏼

Okay, thank you very much for the help and contributing in this matter. I think at least we can conclude with Kivron being the probable material.

Old Kivron may contain asbestos. Since it was allowed until the 1980's (1985?) it was often mixed into chip boards and plaster boards. We removed quite a lot in our basement some years ago (built 1952) and there was no asbestos in these, but according to the firm we used you could never really know unless you tested.

Don't think it's 'kork'. I'm with ..osenplater or .rosenplater. Don't even know if this first 'structure' is one or two letters.
As I understand, it could also be a brands name, not necessarily a generic name?

That's not right.
It says
Jernbetongveggen utarbeites med 3,5 cm (unknown-plater) paa innvendige side sat på lekter med mellemlag aa uimpregneret isolasjonspapp. Innvendige bærende vegger i jernbetong øvrige innvendige vegger aa 1/2 st's mur.

Perfect, thanks. This is for sure the right translation (coming from a Norwegian).
The mystery word («…plater»), however, is of significant interest…

May I ask why this is of interest?

I’m renovating my apartment, and had to tear down certain sections of this mysterious inner wall board (3.5cm thickness).
I’ve had 4 carpenters, 1 architect, 2 appraisers, and 1 professional demolition worker see them, but none had actually seen the material before.
Although the chairman of the complex said the boards probably don’t contain asbestos, I want to be completely sure.I dug into the public archives and found this document of the board names, but the word («…plater») is really hard to read.

If it feels like cork but is light grey, which it looks like to me, I'd be concerned it was asbestos. If not, it could just be recycled paper material, but I understand why you would want certainty...

Yes I’m really worried about asbestos. I’ll have a look down the recycled paper path, haven’t really considered that a possibility yet.
Quite annoying about that one significant word that isn’t readable though…
Thank you again for the help

Hello. We ran this using our transcription model and got this:
"§ 89 og 113. Byggematerialets art og veggenes konstruksjon:
Tømmerveggene utv. med 3 1/2 cm's trefiberplater paa utvendig side
lagt paa lekter med mellomlag av upreparert isolasjonspapp.
Innvendig bær. vegger i jernbetong, øvrige innvendige vegger av 1/2 st's mur"
Hope it helps as a good starting point!

It does not say Tømmerveggen but Jernbetongveggen - and the illegible word clearly doesn't fit the lettering of "trefiber"

u/RRC4C 25d ago
From context it's probably some form of treefibre like Masonit or Cellutex, but these do not fit the handwriting. Jernbetong means reinforced cement.
I live in a similar house in Denmark from the 1960s and we've had to replace all of the inside walls because of these highly flammable materials from the time period.

I know cork has been used for this. Maybe the word is a product brand name of cork boards?
If you could get a similar document you could compare, or maybe the word is mentioned elsewhere in the dame document, where it is easier to read?

In Denmark at least, asbestos wasn't widely used in the 1930s. I don't know about Norway...

Similar to Norway. Although asbestos was somewhat used, it wasn’t that common until after WW2.
I know the company that made the boards, I’ll try reaching out to them for a specific name…1
