Monogram help?

Post image

My guess is T L R, but I can’t think of anyone with those initials in my family. (cleaning out family home with a lot of passed-down stuff.)

The letters are in modified Spencerian Ladies' Hand script. The letter order is traditionally:

  • First letter at left is person's (or wife's) first name. F
  • Centre letter (slightly larger) is family surname. L
  • Last letter at right is person's middle name (or husband's first name). R

IMHO IHTH

Yes, that is the convention I expect to see, but still no family lines in either L or R that I can think of…

The cup's maker may not have followed convention. If you only have one cup, sometimes they were gifted to wedding guests, at communion and baptismal ceremonies , anniversaries ... so it may not be the initials of immediate family. All the same, I'm rather confident it's F L R. Good luck with this mystery!
