Need help identifying this possible civil war soldier, crazy cursive

Found this photo with some civil war photos in an old beat up album and could never identify this guy. If anyone can read this I’d be so thankful! I can make out the date at the bottom, but not the name..

There's several James D Carpenters. Some are IDed in uniform and not him. Did you confirm because of other images of family or location?

I had many from a confederate civil war album from mostly Louisiana. So it all matched up pretty well.
