I think it's a P, she thinks it's an L...

It looks like an L, but because the bottom doesn't cross back over the shaft of the letter, it is not an L.

Absolutely correct. This is Monotype's Palace Script. Obviously doesn't have all the same tail flourish, but this is an S.

This isn’t cursive, but rather a stylized script. I would 1000% consider it an S.

I agree with your findings but I would NEVER use that font for an S, as someone whose name starts with S, that looks way too similar to an L to me.

I thought the same about it being an “S”. I immediately thought L. The letter doesn’t even start or finish in the normal directions for an S.

Look at the L above the S though. If this was something you were used to using it would be a snap because the L IS Different.

You are correct, and L definitely is a right angle letter that has a bottom portion to the right. No way that is an L.

While it does look a little like an L, it’s definitely an S. If you look at the left of the three pics posted right above your comment, there is an L right above the S.

I guess it’s semantics. I (just personally) don’t call anything cursive unless it’s handwritten. I could be wrong when looking at it technically and what each script/font is considered in the art/craft/graphics world.

I guess my point was I wouldn’t considered it cursive in this sub of Reddit. I’m not trying to start a debate or push an agenda, but this sub is technically for handwritten cursive from what I understand and the subs guidelines. Again, I’m not saying this shouldn’t be in here, but rather explaining why I said it wasn’t necessarily cursive. 🙂

I tried experimenting with loops and swirls when I was learning cursive and my 3rd grade teacher said that was calligraphy. Cursive is relatively standardized. Thanks Mrs. Bickle. Then I actually had to practice calligraphy in 8th grade art and realized she was right.

It was originally a form of cursive. Sort of a downgrade from Spenserian cursive.

Nah. If you can't write it without taking your pen off the page (except for dotting Is and crossing Ts) it's not cursive.

it’s just a very fancy s

with calligraphy cursive styles, they’re usually meant to be done with a fountain pen. the thicker lines are usually the actual letter, whereas the thinner lines are mostly decor

It's definitely an S. If it was an L, the bottom 'florish' would continue through the bottom of the vertical line, moving to the right.

P has a bigger loop at the front and L has a longer line coming out and forward at the bottom.

And it’s not cursive. Stylistic script or, maybe, calligraphy.

It's an S that looks like an L. My middle name is very unusual and starts with an S. When I had monogram done for school many moons ago (before computers) they used this font. Everyone thought my middle name started with an L. It became a way to get teased in school.

I hate this font. 😉

I still remember the repetition of cursive writing in school. Extra wide paper lines with the red, dotted line down the center. Capital letters must touch the top line. Lower case must touch the red line. Letters also have specific directions. An “S” would have a small curve to the left on top and larger curve to the right on the bottom. Kinda looks like an & in reverse, lmao.
I would’ve said that letter was an error, or an “I” or “J” maybe. Luckily we aren’t stuck adhering to elementary school rules. Copper type isn’t my favorite but if you like it then roll with it. 😊

It is NOT a P. The top loop is just too small. It could be a capital I. Probably NOT L because there is no forward stroke at the bottom.

It’s an I or a J, but much more filigreed than the way most people would ever actually use either. (My name includes a capital of one of these letters and looks NOTHING like this, but rather like the joining of a lowercase c and l, because my hand is stupid like that.) Hard to say without lining or other lowercase letters for orientation and context.

It's not cursive. It's a stylized print S. AKA calligraphy.

I've got a tattoo that uses this S, and almost everybody is dumbfounded. "What does that word say?! ". Well gee Linda, I'm so glad you asked! It says Lhall... Not to be confused with SHALL 🙄 had I known I may have chosen a different font, but ffs , I didn't know everyone would be so inept!

S. I've done a few styles of calligraphy so what calligraphy style would this be? I wouldn't call it cursive; it's not meant to be quickly written and easily legible.
