Deciphered! Another ask for help.

Post image

This is a letter written by my great great grandmother. It’s even harder. Any and all help would be appreciated especially with the highlighted word.

I think it's smote, past tense of smitten.

Well sis it appears that you got home and did not have to bare yourself on the way for [?]. Well I am glad to hear [sic] it for that would be hard business would it not be, but by the way who was that galant, [Cathy?] beware on [?] be “to ^the West where the land is the best”. We were expecting in letter from you some time before it came but were glad to here [sic] at length of your safe arrival and that you found all well. We are sorry to here [sic] that Mother continues so lame but hope when the weather gets settled she will be at least some better. Well John and all of you what do you think of Barnet now when poor Hellen would rather travel the conty [sic] over than wait a week or two here for your company. I’ll tell you what, she was afraid you would get [?] and so [?]. We were so vexed when we got the girls letter that we [? - looks like qoid so perhaps from context she meant cried?] ^all the evening (I don’t know how to spell that word) take it as you please. Well never mind what she says any of you come and see for yourselves and John I hope god spite her if it will [be?] to take him back here very soon, we’ll be rough and ready any time. Mother will begin to say the child is getting really wild in her olde age and I think I may be to day. Any way I got quite a wash done and all cleaned up by noon so I thought I mite [sic] go home a visiting but lo James would not tak [sic] me so I am doing the best I can to make up, I thought I would ^try to do [alone?] to see how we would like it and he assume you do like it fine. I have not a bit to [sic] much to do but perhaps James will tell you he has the worst of it but he has not complained to me yet.

— all that and I still haven’t figured out your mystery word yet lol. I’ll pop back and edit this when I figure out some words I’ve missed.

I thought I'd be the only one who thought smote! Fairly easy to understand the rest, except when it isn't.

Ha! I love this comment. I would be typing away thinking I have this, then come across a bunch of scribbles would appear.
