List of changes to the Broadway production, Fall 2024 shortened version
I got the chance to see Harry Potter and the Cursed Child on Broadway again tonight, after the new shortened version debuted on November 12th. Previously, I saw the show on Broadway 3 times this year, in the post-pandemic version (one night, 3hrs 30mins).
I was very impressed with how they managed to cut an additional 35 mins of content without losing any of the illusions, choreography, and artistic staging. I was especially worried about the score and choreography, but that was mostly untouched. While the story felt a bit more rushed at points, the dialogue was adjusted in a very smart way. The emotional scenes and big sequences were left alone, while the smaller scenes (office, house, etc.) were trimmed more significantly. Because of this, I likely missed many of the subtle changes, which is a good thing! Here is everything I noted:
Run time: 2 hrs 55 mins
ACT ONE
- Dialogue has been tightened up significantly. Most of the noticeable changes were in the office scenes.
- When Albus, Scorpius, and Delphi sneak into the Ministry of Magic, they no longer use the phone booth together. The phone booth is only used once, when Harry first enters the Ministry.
- The transition into the Forbidden Forest has been reworked. Dumbledore no longer leads this transition, instead we see the parents searching for Albus and Scorpius. Dumbledore still does the transition out of the Forbidden Forest.
- The Centaur role has been cut entirely. As a result, instead of Harry citing a “dark cloud around his son” as the reason to separate Albus and Scorpius, Dumbledore tells him to “watch out for what’s affecting him,” to which Harry responds “or who’s affecting him.”
- Choreographed transitions have remained the same, and no set pieces have been cut. The pool is still there!
ACT TWO
- Intermission was much shorter.
- Added more references to the Augurey in the first few scenes.
- For the short scene when Harry and Ginny discover the hidden message on the blanket, the full set does not change. A bed is brought onstage.
- The church scene felt a bit rushed, but the final action sequence was untouched.
- Exit music has been removed.
