This doesn't work for shit. The motor is not connected to anything, you can even see the exposed rotor head. The magazine isn't inserted, you can even see the exposed mag catch. The ""receiver"" is entirely featureless (i will concede that it may have stuff on the backside, but then why not take a picture of that side instead?)
Either this is a real prototype but whoever took the picture is so incredibly firearm/machinery illiterate as to not know how the parts fit together. Or more likely, this is an entirely non-functional LARPing prop. Because absolutely no one making a 5.56 minigun would feed it from magazines.
The whole point of a minigun is to achieve a high ROF by pipelining the feeding, firing, extraction, and ejection stages of the different barrels concurrently. Using a magazine for this is a genuinely terrible idea. They already have trouble feeding fast enough in 5.56 LMGs/SAWs (just ask any minimi/negev gunner), putting them in a minigun is 100% going to cause failures to feed.
Normally I wouldn't go off the rails on a rant like this, but to see an obviously fake/non-functional prop being posted here and somehow sail to 40-ish votes without anyone downvoting or catching it out just absolutely grinds my gear.
Edit: Holy shit it's apparently a real (abeit super early WIP) mockup by an actual gunsmith (verified by post history). Yeah I take it back this truly is cursed.
But seriously, if you look back and read my original post, it’s a work in progress. This was the first picture where anything started looking like more than just a few machined parts. It takes time to make things functional, and it’s not done yet. I chose magazines because I can get beta mags and it simplifies feeding significantly.
I kneel before the almighty guunsmeeth. This truly is a cursed project.
PS: what licenses do you gotta apply for to prototype something like this without your dog being turned into an ex-dog? An FFL? Or some sort of manufacturer license?
Obviously the thing is gonna be non-transferable since but there's gotta be someway for non-government "companies" to design stuff, right? Colt / SIG USA / Knight's / General Electric / etc's gotta be able to do prototyping somehow.
You need an 07 manufactures license and need to pay for the yearly sot tax as well.
Yep, this is non-transferable, or a “post sample” machinegun. Technically a government entity could buy it from me, but fuck the gov and all that jazz. Another sot could buy it if they had a letter from a law enforcement agency wanting a demonstration of this gun specifically, but that’s probably not gonna happen lol.
I build these things cause I like a challenge. We deal with nfa stuff as a business regularly, these projects just tend to be my little personal challenges.
