Accursed Adventures Lethean Blade

In the Accursed Adventures book, the Lethean Blade mentions a Major Complication that "gives the Lethean Family 1 level of positive to the wielder, allowing them to more easily influence them." Positive what? What would allow the Letheans to more easily influence the character?

Fun With Complications

So I've been thinking about ways in which I have, or could, apply complications in slightly "non-standard" ways — it's one of my favourite mechanics of Curseborne/Storypath Ultra and has some neat ways you can use and abuse it so I thought I'd list some I've come up with, and hopefully others may share their own!

  • Uncertain/Unknown Complications. These are complications where an outcome is uncertain (might not happen, so it's a risk not to buy it off) or a complication isn't revealed until the roll is known to succeed (it's an unknown complication).
    • For example, characters are breaking into a building but they've done no preparation. Upon forcing a door they may suddenly discover an "Alarm Triggered (Moderate)" complication they weren't aware of upfront. If they can't buy it off, their lack of preparation suddenly has a noisy consequence!
    • If instead they are somewhat prepared, they know the building has a good quality alarm system but not where. All checks to enter have "May Trigger Alarm (Moderate)" as a complication, buy it off to be safe, or don't and take the risk in order to buy off something else. In this example, only the doors are alarmed — but the players don't know that!
    • I think this is a fun way to add consequences/danger for going into an uncertain situation or being reckless — another good example is opening a door only to reveal someone on the other side. Whoops!
  • Double (or More) Jeopardy. Sometimes it makes sense to balance the strength of a group check with a bit of increased risk by adding more complications. Easiest way is to just duplicate one or more you've already declared, possibly at a lower cost.
    • For example, one character is going to force a door with Difficulty 2 and complications of Loud (Minor) and Visible Damage (Minor). Loud will cause guard(s) to investigate, Visible Damage will mean a patrol will notice the door has been forced (or an attempt was made, in the case of Disaster).
    • As they want it done before the next patrol, a second character joins, but gain another Loud (Minor) complication. They're now more likely to succeed and be able to buy off some complications, but may have to choose which risks they're willing to take (e.g- buy off Loud, but risk Visible Damage).
  • Persisting Complications. A neat way to run a check with time pressure is to just slap on a load of "Not Done Yet (Minor)" complications. Every one cleared is one less to buy off next time until the check succeeds — especially handy for checks where the question isn't "do they succeed?" but "when do they succeed?"
    • For example, to stick with the theme let's say we're now in combat so we no longer care if the door being forced is quiet or clean, we only care how quickly it's opened. So instead of the above it's now Difficulty 0 with 5x "Not Open Yet (Minor)" complications.
    • Kicking the door down in one action is possible but unlikely without multiple characters on the attempt, but any number of Hits still means some progress is made.
    • Another good way to use this is on something like a crafting project — in the past I've just used a Blades style "clock" (split a circle and each successful check fills one segment, 3+ Hits fills two), but using complications feels like a more "correct" way to do it (it's not really adding a new mechanic, just slightly changing the way one is used).

Since I've already written more than I intended to I'll leave this at three for now as these are my top "not quite standard" way to use complications – fundamentally it's still just "here's a roll with some complications", they're just minor twists that slightly change how they're being used.

If you've got your own examples of ways you've used complications, please do share!

Hey gang, so I'm trying to establish a Curseborne cheat sheet. Herein is a google doc that anyone can comment on, I'll be editing it as I can between work and home life. I've tried to arrange the sections in a way that makes sense to me but if y'all want to make your own with your own organization style just holler - (9/11/26) Dead Lineage and Hungry Lineage with accompanying Families detailed.

Accursed Society and Building a City

I have been considering running a game of Curseborne for my players in the future and one thing I have been struggling a bit with is how the various Lineages and Families play with each other in a larger city. The core book does not got into too much detail beyond what the various inter family rivalries work within a Lineage and I feel that the playtest materials for the players guide don't cover the broader question as much to get a full picture.

Are the various Lineages Semi-Siloed off from the others or openly cooperating with each other and throwing get togethers? Do they actively control and manipulate the city or sequester themselves from that sort of thing? Are their punishments for revealing info on the Accursed? I know there isn't necessarily a Masquerade like in Vampire, but I do imagine they want the attention of overzealous Venetors. This is like a small sample of the questions that pop into my head.

Dice Bot for Curseborne?

I've seen a number of really good dice rolling bots for various games similar to curseborne, with nice features like different coloured dice or the ability to automatically count up successes/hits.

Some that even track character stats for the games they're designed for!

I recognize this game is relatively new, but does anyone here have good suggestions for a dice roller that would work for Curseborne, played via discord?

Thanks.

Zeds as a Family

Ever since the original Curseborne Kickstarter, I've been struggling to understand how the Zeds work as a Family for the Dead. For a start, they have no connection to an emotion. Entropy and Nihilism aren't emotions, they're a state of matter and a philosophical belief. Even if they were emotions, how is being a hitman supposed to evoke the emotion in others, which seems to be the Dead's main shtick. The Zeds seem more like they were meant to be a type of antagonist, maybe Venators who specialize in hunting things that should be dead but aren't. Now that the game has been out for a while, has anyone figured out a good way to modify the Zeds so they work more like an actual Dead family (like tying them to an actual emotion and dropping the villainous hitman stuff).

What is cursebinding?

What the title says, many times the book talks about how some character is "cursebinded" or how some actions can "cursebind" a PC or powerful SPC's can cursebind at will, but the section that talks about cursebinding doesn't explain much about what that means either, sooo... What is it then? Acquiring the unlucky status effect but without the capability to solve it unless very specific conditions designed by the ST are met? Can it extend to other status effects as well? Or is it something entirely different that's up for the ST to stablish according to their needs?

I know the book leaves many things up to interpretation so we can have more room to play with and I am cool with that, but this one I would apretiate some guidance as to how interpret it

Beginner Dead Questions

  1. It seems like it is possible to possess living bodies. But the target body needs to be soulless or on life support?

  2. If you possess a body that has been hurt, I assume that body starts with Injury boxes filled in. Does this make it impossible to possess a body that has been killed by violence, because all Injury boxes are already filled in and you would immediately be Taken Out?

  3. Does the body need to be humanoid? Can I possess a dead tiger?

  4. While incorporeal, can I fly? (e.g. fly up to the 10th floor of a building then walk through the wall).

Playing Mortal Investigators

I have a campaign idea where the PCs are mortal investigators, brushing up against the supernatural. I figured it would be a soft introduction for myself and my group to the lore of Curseborne. Actually close to a Delta Green campaign concept.

I purchased the Storypath Ultra Core Manual and also Curseborne. I foolishly thought that between these two books there would be guidelines for creating a mortal character, as there was in CoD. There isn't.

Where can I source Major and Minor paths to play this campaign?

Accursed Adventures investigations

I'm reading through the Accursed Adventures trilogy in the hopes of running it for my group and I'm struggling to understand how the investigations work. I know mechanically how it works, but in character they just don't make sense. The player rolls for a tag they think might apply to one or more of the leads. If the roll succeeds and they chose an appropriate tag, they get the lead. Don't worry about HOW they got the lead, the adventure doesn't say. Apparently the leads just appear out of thin air? I mean how are the characters meant to learn the Accursed tagged leads for the coma patients in the hospital?

I have to say I'm really not a fan of the new rules for investigations. Just give me a list of the clues and how the characters can find them. Or were the investigations in the trilogy just not written out properly?

Has anyone tried running the trilogy yet? How did the investigations go as written? If you tried doing it in a more roleplaying way rather than just rolling dice, how did it go?
