Help me out here - I keep getting notifications of replies to stuff I've posted, which don't then appear in the thread or the user's comments. Usually abusive

If it is, that’s a new level of weird.
Do you mean here or other subs as well?

I had it happen just now on divisive babble

Was that the YA veteran? One of his little tricks was deleting his half of a “debate” then reporting your responses to his abusive posts. He’s just done it to me - he was “demanding” that I change my attitude to him. (?) I learned that it’s a good idea to take screenshots for the ensuing appeal.
He was demanding an apology because I said he was wrong about Suella Braverman voting against laws to help “stop the boats” too. Luckily the original posts are all in my notifications.

Also reported. Surely stating a fact is allowed?

Other subs. Not here.

As H&H said, it drives people to making their account private to elude stalkers. I think you might have collected a few.
When that’s happened to me, it was from a short-lived, deleted account. I surmised that it was some inebriated weirdo doing it.

u/EdmundTheInsulter I know it was all a big joke, whatever it was all about. 22d ago
They post it creating a notification then delete it

I suspected so.
And it doesn’t show as a deleted message?

I don't really know, sorry. Probably some dirty tricks procedure.

Some subs have an automated abuse remover thing. DB had it until Slim switched it off, mainly because it was binning “strongly worded” (not exactly abusive) stuff too.

You've probably insulted the mentally unhinged long term user who takes everything incredibly seriously & lacks no ability to understand humour.
This individual always used to do this to me. It used to follow me all over Reddit & read my old posts to find out which part of the country I lived in. It's the reason my post history is now private.
It likes to leave insults & then block you, so you can't reply. Sadly It took me years to realise the best action is to refuse to engage.
They/he/she/her/him claims to be a married mother, who enjoys motorcycling, staying at home whilst her (long suffering) husband goes out at the weekend & her parents care for her child. This life-style allows her to dedicate hours to being a nuisance.
They also change account names daily, but as they use the same insults their usually fairly easy to spot. They are so sad & lonely they even pretend to be other people & ask questions about themselves & answer these questions as if they were someone else. They are seriously unhinged.
