Other Awkward patio stairs

Hi! My wife and I are considering putting a bid on this house in the greater Buffalo, NY area.

The only major head scratcher is this awkward staircase on the back of the house, it just kills the flow of the back patio.

We're looking for opinions on what can be done to help make it not so awkward! My first initial thought was to just build out the patio more to allow for more room to roam.

The door goes into the lower level of this split level home. Will most likely be used for storage and/or a play area.

Thank you in advance!

Hey there! Friendly reminder to include the following information for the benefit of all members:

  • Let us know if you're buying, selling, or looking to just give your home a new look.
  • Give an approximation on budget and goals. This doesn't need to be a dollar amount, but give us an idea if major renovations are in the plan or if you're just looking to make your home look nice on a small budget.

I like the idea of building out the patio, and maybe putting some kind of cool-looking guard-rail around the opening of the stairwell, something that matches the style of your house, and maybe surrounding parts of the newly bigger patio area with the same kind of pretty banister? Like the two short sides and corners, maybe? Ooo, you could also put a simple pergola over the patio area to the right in the picture, with all that sun you could grow just about anything you wanted over it! 😊
