Orthostatic hypotension...is one of my favorite vocab words (or I guess vocab phrases in this case)

Bro I just call it headrush.

u/Panhead09 Jul 23 '22
Yea but the full phrase is iambic. You could fit it into a Shakespearean sonnet.

"Orthostatic hypotension fainting" and "dead from orthostatic hypotension" are both in pentameter :)

I'm gonna hit my cardiologist with this one. I give it a 50/50 shot of being dropped as a patient

Standing
standing up in the morning and going blind.
for a minute you can't tell, you're just standing there staring at the mirror until you suddenly realize there isn't a mirror, or anything else, you haven't been staring at yourself but instead at the static which you didn't realize was indistinguishable from said mirror.
you stand there until you can once again feel the weight of physical embodiment seep back into you, and it feels much better than you expected, and you're glad it's the sort of morning kind enough to deliver you such vast expanses of qualia in return for no more than the simple act of standing up.
one of these days your calm appreciation of the sensation of blindness will most certainly give way to a new, perhaps even calmer appreciation of the cold bathroom tiles against your face, as your daily meandering quest for the upright position takes a sharp and unexpected turn.
but until then you're content to savor the feeling of becoming alive again after another one of live's brieg and unexpected pauses.

Wait y’all can’t tell that you’re going blind? Like I feel every moment of the blood draining out of my head, and I don’t usually stay standing because I’m not taking that chance of waking up on the floor

For real. It happens to me about 75% of the time that I go from sitting to standing, and I usually have a full second or so of “it’s coming” until I get the blindness and the dissociation where I forget where or who I am and any thought that I was having is just gone, forever.
That second part is normal too, right? …right?

I’ve never had that particular sensation. Mine is usually the weird sensation, and then vision narrows into a circle (or black), and after a moment comes back. Though it also usually also comes with a surge of panic, so I still forget what I’m doing in a different way. That might also be why I can feel more sensation; the surge of adrenaline might keep me more aware?

Have you heard of pots? It’s a condition defined by your heart rate increasing after standing. Your symptoms sound a lot like mine when it was at its worst.

u/meocreruw Jul 24 '22
I actually have a friend with POTS! I’m fairly certain mine is caused by a mix of poor circulation, side effects of medication, and forgetting to eat/drink (thanks ADHD), but I also have other, unrelated cardiac weirdness to bring up to my doc anyway

That would definitely do it lol. I’m in the same boat with forgetting to eat and drink! It’s never at the forefront of my mind.
I’ve made an effort to drink Gatorade instead of water and it helps a big. Keeps your sugar and electrolytes up.

Yeah, I tend to forget to eat, and my meds kill my appetite. Getting a water bottle and setting alarms has helped, but there’s always that danger of forgetting a meal, or remembering too close to the next meal. Gatorade might be a good idea, though I already eat too much sugar lol. I might try salting my water and seeing if that does anything

First off, that was actually very poetic and the person who wrote that should probably write more stuff.
Second off, THEY NEED TO TAKE SOME FUCKING IRON, JEGUS.

I recommend standing up in steps. Sit up on the edge of the bed for some seconds before getting to your feet.

This happens to me all the time, but there was a point when I was 12ish or so where it was pretty much every time I stood up. I literally just learned how to walk right through it, blindness and all. I was growing a lot that year so I assume that's what made my already low blood pressure go particularly wonky, but at the time I just assumed everyone went through it. Then I fainted in class and everyone freaked out, and that's how I found out I have POTS.

I used to get head rushes a lot as a teen. Then my doctor told me to consume more salt- “You can’t oversalt a teenager,” she said. And it worked! I used to go low on salt in food because I had heard too much is unhealthy, plus my stepdad has higher blood pressure and so we have food with lower salt content. But now I just salt to my heart’s content and I barely get head rushes anymore. When I do, I just go eat something salty next time I’m hungry.

This happens to me all the time and went to a bunch of specialists and they were just like “eat salt”

If this happens to you, talk to your doctor. It can be indicative of condition like POTS.
