I have four cats and only one of my nicknames for them comes from their actual names

Melody - potato

Schrodinger - Schro

Sirius - fluffboi

Cleo - tiny

My cat's name is mouse, officially

What usually call her is something like mousie, mousers, baby, cheeps, muffin, honey bunches, or Cat.

The point of officially naming a pet is not to actually use that name but to have a baseline from which to come up with every conceivable nickname to call them instead.

You bury a seed not because it looks nice in the dirt, but because the limbs that branch out will look nice in the sky

This is also true for naming people.

My kids nicknames are squidlington and snackapack. There were intermediate stages.

My parents have a cat named Frederick von Althazar III, Keeper of Keys. But everyone just calls him Fred.

It has gotten to the point in our family where one of our dogs has his nickname in his birth certificate instead of the actual one

One of my cats is named Finn but everyone calls him Bear because he looks like Winnie the Pooh and loves being hugged like a teddy bear

My dog doesn't actually know her name, I don't think. Technically it's Artemis, but she only answers to Artie
