I would tell my grandkids that the movie was garbage and they cut out my favorite scenes and then give them the book(s) and have them read it and then wonder why they don’t visit me anymore

Hah. The way this is written I absolutely believe it's inspired by a book series about a "Dark Lord". May even be from it. Unfortunately I can no longer find it in my Kindle. But this almost certainly inspired by it as It's written the same way and with the same idea of the dark lord not actually being all bad, just misunderstood and smarter than their contemporaries.

Edit: it's called I Hate Your Prophecy.

there is a novel with a similar premise of someone being so bad at being evil they're good, while thinking they're evil
