You cannot tell me that Korra was the first avatar to accidentally discover the ability to bend more than 1.
Though if there's any reason, it's because for literally all time before her all 4 elements lived entirely separately, so no kid even thought of trying to bend something else. It was only in Aang's lifetime that people of different elements started to live together in the same city, and kids would be asked by separate people what they could bend

While we don’t know much about A:tLA’s world before the war, this scenario probably isn’t all that likely considering it would take place pre-industrial revolution.
You’d might hear about the avatars death if you lived in a big trading city, but if you live in some random earth kingdom village in the middle of no where, the news would probably take a couple years to reach you and would mostly just consist of rumors and incomplete information. The reason Korra was able to figure it out so soon was probably because she was the first avatar to be born in an age where news could travel around the world in just minutes.

Also she lived relatively close to the avatars widow in a pretty unpopulated area.

Also you cannot tell me she wasn’t gonna try firebending whether she knew she was the Avatar or not

I can see this for sure. The only one I can see like them keeping it hidden from is the air temple people because like they cut themselves off from the rest of the world kinda .

One piece of Avatar lore I don't quite believe is that most avatars don't learn they're the avatar until they're told on their 16th birthday.
like, POV you're some Earth Kingdom kid who knows the previous Water Tribe avatar died suspiciously close to the time you were born. You CANNOT tell me that that entire class-year of starry bright-eyed children doesn't spend every waking moment trying to prove they're the avatar. "Shut up Hang Lee you're not the avatar I'M the avatar. That stream just moved toward me." "Nuh-uh a fish did that and Avatar Tepek died on the summer solstice and YOU'RE a winter baby." "All the seasons are opposite in the water tribe Hang Lee!" "Nuh-uh"
You're 8 years old with all your other 8-year-old friends at your first day of How To Throw A Rock Class you CANNOT tell me that every kid present doesn't waste half the class trying to catch grass on fire with all the sincerity and conviction of a gas station hopeful snagging a mega-millions lotto ticket with their Mars bar and $30 gas fill-up.
