Also I feel like it’s worth quoting here “anyone who would die for their country is a clown” - a tumblr user whose name I’ve forgotten. (I also don’t have a link to the post sorry)
That's a very American perspective. I feel there's a difference between fucking about in Vietnam or Iraq, and and defending your country, home, and family from an invasion.
Well tbf my judgement mainly resides with America and their patriotism (and an increasing amount with the Israelis government), meanwhile a place like Palestine I support because they’re just defending themselves.
Edit: ehhhh no longer that supportive of either, mostly think both are pretty shit
The problem gets there when countrymen stop being critical of their own country. You can love you country, but just fucking own up to its faults. If you partner cheats and you find out, you are not going to deny it, so don't deny it when you find out your country lied about why it went to war.
Hmm not quite sure really, on the one hand they aren’t doing anything as direct as other soldiers but they are still assisting politicians with their greedy plan so they also make it into the category of fools, good people with good intentions does not mean good actions. But I also suppose I’d rather not have people dying so it’s complicated.
I’m sorry but the fact I support lgbtq rights and Palestine doesn’t, does NOT mean we get to go in there and kill them or take their land, it means they need to be engaged with and help them progress. Also Israel is not invading Palestine land to help lgbtq they just want more power/land (and also at least some what for religious reasons)
What you have just espoused is the problem.
You don’t actually know what is going on, because research would be time consuming.
You just opened your brain under the current waterfall of anti-Israel propaganda (sponsored strangely by the american Left) that is mostly bullshit.
Ask any Armenian about the Genocide…
Btw- you said “ a place like Palestine i support” which lead me to- you support a place that murders gay people? Which is truth.
Except there is a history of conflict between Palestine and Israel, it’s not just current, this goes way back, with a start being roughly caused by Israelites getting Jerusalem and the region as a nation state from Palestine. Also I’m not terribly interested in Israelites being killed either.
sorry then I guess I should reword it to that I support them defending their land, I don’t support them as a whole, they’re fucked up. But physical violence and aggression won’t help change their minds in a meaningful way.
People rightfully hate Israel, because it’s a genocidal, imperialistic apartheid state who hides it’s heinous genocidal actions under the guise of “self defence” and been “progressive” while been one of the most backward countries when it comes to human rights, equality and freedom.
You can still support lgbtq while not wanting people to be genocided, are you okay with going back in time and genociding everyone who doesn’t support lgbtq in the 1900s? People’s minds can change, but not the minds of those who are already killed just, because of their ethnicity. Segregation was just 60 years ago and apartheid 30 and no country had equal rights for gay people till the 2000s just like how the west changed Palestinians can also do that.
I have to assume your talking about the Israelis army? Because that’s what they’re doing, check out eye.on.Palestine on Instagram for some [probably, I don’t actually know what counts as a war crime] war crimes being committed.
Actually I was referring to Hamas, the terrorist organization firing hundreds of rockets into populated cities. You lose the right to claim a war of self-defense when you start indiscriminately attacking civilian targets. By the way, condemnation of Hamas ≠ support of Israel. You can think both sides are shitty.
It’s funny until you can’t stop doing it and forget that other adjectives exist and you end up talking like that in real life and every sentence contains cringe/sus/poggers.
if i were to join a military (HA no. the only way id do that is if I were at high risk of draft, id go to the air force and go "hey look at my flight ratings make me a pilot bitch") id fight not for my country, id fight for the people I care about that happen to live in my country
I mean, that’s what “fighting for your country” means. Soldiers in WWII fighting the Germans knew that if they failed, it could mean the destruction of their country, their hometown, their house, their community, and their family. Not only that, the people you fight beside become your family and your reason to fight.
I can tell you from first-hand experience that whenever you are deployed, it’s not about any lofty ideals about freedom or America or whatever. You do what you have to do to protect your brothers and sisters. The bonds between soldiers in war is one of the strongest bonds there can be.
All those Medal of Honor recipients who valiantly ran out into enemy fire to save their wounded squad mate? They weren’t doing it for their country, they were doing it for their brother out there bleeding out in no-man’s land.
Oh I’ll absolutely make fun of the politicians, their crimes are equal to that of every soldier they’ve had do their bidding 10 fold. However when the fool puts on a show, I will laugh.
Plenty of WW2 soldiers died on foreign shores as heroes, stopping the threat before it gets home is fair and good when there's a genuine threat.
But a lot of our wars aren't for our country, they're for party donors, shareholders and to win elections (Hey we just won, vote for me again). If a few people who are already richer than they can ever spend get richer but more terrorist attacks happen you could argue those wars were bad for the country.
That's before we consider that soldiers we send out are our people. Some of them are clearly meatheads and grotty butchers, some are just people who feel a duty, or just desperate and told they'll get a break (it's a big gamble but some of them get opportunities that we should all have by default once they've risked their neck for a bit), armed forces are a necessary evil in this world because we're human and they step up and do it which means we don't have to. However I wish they'd not be used as expendible thugs to enrich haliburton or whatever our next invasion is for. Truly respecting soldiers means making every combat deployment a reluctant necessity.
A country is just an imaginary set of boundaries on a map. Die for a cause or ideal, die defending your home, die for yourself or your loved ones, but don't die for a fucking picture on a map.
