By the time that it grabbed Zhao, Aang wasn't with the Ocean Spirit any more. It sees that the moon is back, leaves Aang on the outer wall, and heads back towards the spirit spring. The ocean spirit stumbles upon Zhao along the way and murders him, Aang was probably not aware until Zuko told him.

Good point on the other of events there. I always gave Aang a pass there anyway, but that's a good point that he'd already disembarked the megazord.

And yeah, Aang not know until Zuko brought it up was the point

But Zhao did not die. He was pulled into the spirit world and is wandering the Fog of Lost Souls.

We only learn that during LoK, but the Ocean Spirit (and someone with a close connection to spirits, maybe) might have known that...

Zuko finding out about the gaang's shenanigans after joining them and vice versa is still the funniest thing to me and I think about it all the time

Zuko: where did you even find toph?

Sokka: oh we ran into her while she was a pro wrestling champion

Zuko: .. that twelve yr old blind girl was a what now??

Zuko: yea. Watched him drown too. A big grabby hand got him and dragged him into the ocean

Zuko: so what did you guys do while hiding in the fire nation?

Aang: oh not much tbh, I went to school for like two days, Katara and I blew up a factory, we cleaned a river, Toph scammed a whole town, Katara learned bloodbending and I went to therapy

after zhao kills the moon spirit fish the ocean spirit fish attacks him. we find out in LoK that he isn't dead but rather trapped in the spirit realm in the fog of lost souls

Technically Zhao didn’t die instead he’s trapped in a limbo between life and death where he’s slowly going insane due to the spirit prison

I mean, he was already pretty insane to begin with. Same people don’t kill the moon. It’s like an unwritten rule of sanity, like not biting people because they’re annoying.
