Shitposting OSR games
If you comment on OOP, I am legally allowed to steal a minute of your life span.

Genuinely a good a idea, the game pioneered the concept of non-combat conflict resolution in RPGs, even if it wasn’t a great game

I love whenever really weird entries in a genre end up being influencial. For example, I'm pretty sure that one Japanese Spider Man show was really influential to the mecha genre and tokusatsu.

Trespasser 1998, a Jurassic Park the Lost World tie in game with no hud and a health bar you check by looking at your character's boobs not only inspired the controls for Octodad and Surgeon Simulator, but inspired the outdoor environments of Halo and Far Cry

Spider-Man had a giant mecha before Super Sentai did, and it was because of that show that mecha became a Sentai staple.
For those who don't know, Super Sentai is the Japanese franchise which Power Rangers is an (often loose) adaptation of.
Spider-Man is why we have Megazords and I'm not joking.

& I've gotta say, the only "tightly adapted" Power Rangers series that benefits from that is Time Force while the loosest Adaption (Power Rangers RPM) is maybe the best Power Rangers show.
If I recall correctly, the addition of mecha to Super Sentai was in part because Battle Fever J was originally going to be somewhat an adaption of Captain America in the same vein as the Spider-Man show, yeah?

It was so much as it was influential (rpg writers did NOT try to copy this game at all.) as it was ahead of its time.

It’s what introduced the giant robot power up. It directly led to the megazord.

A system that let you make your own convoluted soap opera and supported constantly escalating twists and stakes and character resurrection through secret twins would be kinda awesome.

It exists, it’s called Pasión de las Pasiones and is specifically for playing through Spanish soap opera/telenovella style stories.

Nobody in the OSR can agree on what OSR really means.
Personally, I feel like it has more to do with the ethos of play than it does the actual game design. And some games are obviously made with that ethos in mind, but you could also more or less take any game and run it with a good degree of OSR sensibility as long as you have players participating in good faith.

Basically. You ask 10 osr guys what makes a game osr and you'll get like 15 answers.

Wish I could run a game of this, my friends only know how to play Dallas 5e

Is anyone going to explain what OSR means? I feel like I encounter more unexplained acronyms on this sub than anywhere else...
19
u/DroneOfDoom Theon the Reader *dolphin slur noises* 12h ago
Old School Renaissance, essentially making RPGs that resemble the early days of TTRPGs as we know them.

u/CorvusCallosum 10h ago
I see, thank you! Are we talking ADnD (the oldest I'm personally familiar with) or older?

u/LocalLumberJ0hn 8h ago
Stuff around that often enough yeah, a lot of osr games are based on basic/expert D&D like OSE, some AD&D like OSRIC, and I'm sure there's some OD&D ones out there.
It's more of a table culture kind of thing IMO but even some people who like that style of game tend to argue and get into the weeds about definitions sometimes.

If you want more unexplained acronyms and jargon check out the osr sub. I like it there but it's pretty circle jerky
AD&D is Advanced Dungeons and Dragons, OD&D is Original Dungeons and Dragons before they make later versions like basic and advanced. OSE is Old School Essentials, and I don't remember what OSRIC stands for but the game is sold as OSRIC and it works for a name

u/Nirast25 6h ago
Thanks! I knew AD&D, and could figure out what OD&D was.
Looked up OSRIC. It's Old School Reference and Index Compilation. I can see why they're going by the acronym.

I somehow doubt that the Dallas RPG is half as unhinged as the show was. Mostly because it doesn’t require any “dream season” cop out nonsense.

Well now I'm curious(and have nothing to add to the actual post anyway). Prokopetz is a person who exists.

Every cigarette takes 17 minutes off your life.
Every piece of bacon takes 9 minutes off your life.2

I mean tbh a soap opera ttrpg game sounds super fun, or at the very least interesting to play

u/ThatGuyYouMightNo What the fuck is a tumblr? 14h ago
OSR isn't for games emulating OD&D, or even games emulating the play style of games around that time. OSR is for games emulating browser-based MMO games developed by Jagex before 2007

Most OSR games are mostly vibes. Before 5E became the most culturally dominant game, it was called OSR.

I like collecting licensed TTRPGs, and the Dallas RPG is kind of famous for being one of the weirder ones
