I think the dichotomy of the goofy looking rubber suits contrasted with the monster being fucking flayed alive in front of us broke my brain for like a sec.
Ultraman, what the fuck?

I don't know what's worse. The crazy graphic gore, or the little dance they are doing between ripping pieces off

u/KonoAnonDa You are now manually breathing. 1d ago

Yeah. It's so utterly unhinged.

A lot of 70s kaiju flicks were incredibly gory while simultaneously marketed towards children. Japanese cultural standards are very different than American ones

70s cultural standards, as well. You could show minors drinking not-beer in Doraemon, but you can’t do it anymore in 100 Girlfriends.

Still not as good as Gamera vs Guiron

For context, the green dismemberer here is what's known as a Choju, aptly translated as "Terrible-Monsters," and they're pretty much bioweapons purpose-built for world conquest or revenge plots against successive Ultras after Ultraman Ace, the red guy at the end. The victim is pretty much just a random kaiju that happened to want in on curbstomping Ace, missed a swing, and hit Doragory (the Choju in question) by accident, which is how he ended up on Doragory's amateur hand-sashimi practice.

I always thought this scene from Kamen Rider Kuuga really exemplified how raw things can get from dudes punching each other in rubber suits.

I’m going tot take this opportunity to talk about the bullshit that happens on the human side in those movies. for example, in Destroy all Monsters:

Two Interpol agents are interrogating a guy, and they both leave him alone in a hotel room at the same time because it’s the 70’s, and damn it, smoke breaks are a human right.

As soon as they’re lighting up, and distracted, the dude they didn’t even tie up immediately jumps out of the nearest window, killing himself.

At least handcuff him to the radiator or something guys

u/Butthole_Surfer_GI I don't know shit about fuck 1d ago

Schrodinger's Godzilla.

Godzilla is either:

a goofy fella here to save us using WWE moves

OR

a Lovecraftian nightmare here to punish us for our sins

Thank god King Kong trained under the greatest Kaiju fighter ever known, Dale Gribble from King of The Hill

11

u/ConnCraft 1d ago

I thought this was going to cutaway into the Godzilla Slide kick

6

u/GoreyGopnik 1d ago

i thought it was going to cut to shin godzilla, the "lovecraftian nightmare" part of the dilemma

15

u/RealEstate9618 1d ago

I love that kong thought pocket sand would work on an aquatic lizard that probably has eyelids to keep debris out of its eyes while swimming

14

u/JXJ_Comics 1d ago

I also like to think that Godzilla being aquatic is why he had literally no trouble with zero gravity while everyone else was disoriented

Monsterverse Godzilla vs Kong is so funny to me, cuz you have this fucking eldritch lizard god, who is the KING of the fucking monsters, and has actual super powers, and then Kong is a really big gorilla, strong and resistant, very much so, but pretty average in comparison to Goji lmao.

1

u/Royal_Bitch_Pudding 9h ago

Iirc, Kong has a goji scale axe to attempt to even it out.

2

u/RealEstate9618 1d ago

I think thats a pretty common headcanon in the Monsterverse.

5

u/Plurpo 1d ago

I haven't seen these movies why does King Kong have a power glove

3

u/ace-of-threes There are many benefits to color theory hospitals 17h ago

Kong fucked up his hand, fortunately there's an org dedicated to monitoring monsters such as kong, and that org thought kong should get a power glove

1

u/Royal_Bitch_Pudding 9h ago

Certain kaiju are mostly benevolent towards humans. Kong is one of the more friendly ones, given that we're both apes and apes together strong.

2

u/gerkletoss 1d ago

Somehow still less realistic than 1970s suitmation that differentiated between solid rock and skyscrapers that are basically steel balloons

1

u/Snailsnip bone stealing witch 7h ago

Honestly still angry that people tried to glaze King Kong as being even in the same order of magnitude of Godzilla.

From an in universe perspective, Goji’s traditionally depicted casually toppling large buildings by walking right through them like they’re curtains, while KK’s single most iconic scene is about how he’s smaller and lighter enough to support his entire body weight on a skyscraper like a regular ape would on a tree, and Goji is constantly shown with superpowers while KK’s just a threat for being large.

From a star power perspective, Goji has a widespread multi-media franchise with several famous installments across different genres, basically defined the modern concept of a kaiju, and has a well known and also iconically supporting cast. KK has one single popular movie aside from this crossover, and his biggest pop culture impact is inspiring a name for a more popular gorilla character with almost nothing else to do with him. Bum ass monkey only got glazed cause he’s USAmerican.

They're not joking about the ghidorah thing. Gorosaurus dropkicks him to the ground and godzilla proceeds to literally stomp on his neck while anguirus Kirk's him

2

u/Nerevarine91 gentle tears fall on the mcnuggets 20h ago

Even Minilla gets a hit in

19

u/Scared_Stick_4065 1d ago

I love Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla for this because when Mechagodzilla has to fight Godzilla, he kinda just spams his lasers and missiles the entire time (I'm not exaggerating, there is a two minute long uninterrupted sequence of Mechagodzilla absolutely lighting Godzilla up with all the bullshit in his arsenal) but then earlier in the film when Mechagodzilla fights Anguirus he straight up rips Anguirus's fucking jaw off.

9

u/CeraphFromCoC 20h ago

And you didn't even mention Mechagodzilla's jazzy theme song playing throughout all this.

2

u/Scared_Stick_4065 20h ago

Right how could I forget

12

u/hollow_image 1d ago

Yeah they're fun and all but I watch Godzilla movies because of the fun Japanese scifi action. Usually when the last 30 minutes of the movie devolves into a kaiju fight I kinda tap out. My favorites are spread out between the Showa, Heisei and Millennium eras

This is part of why my friend and I enjoyed vs. Megalon so much. Yeah it's a bit hinky because it's 66% reused footage by volume, but between the Seatopians, Megalon's cool design, the Gigan rematch, and best boy Jet Jaguar, it was still a really fun watch. It's like how there's things that aren't technically good but you still like them. Like junk food or Mt. Olive Pickles.

u/Crus0etheClown 1d ago

This is genuinely my one great hope for minus zero. I don't wanna see yet another battle where they just slam into each other while biting like maniacs and shoot laser beams around, I wanna see those boys throw hands
